The story of the two disciples walking to Emmaus has an important message for us in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
With the Crucifixion still fresh in their minds, and not aware of the Resurrection, they are confused, disheartened, doubtful. They have lost hope. So focused on the negative, they are unable to understand that Jesus is there, walking with them.
But as they listen again to the Good News, as the Scriptures are explained by this stranger, the flames of faith and hope are rekindled:
“Were not our hearts burning within us…?”
Then, gathered at the table, breaking bread together, their eyes are opened, their faith restored.
One of the disciples is unnamed, giving each of us the opportunity to put ourselves on that road. And that is where we are today. Let us listen to that voice, let our eyes be opened.
Together with our families and friends, in our communities, we can move forward together, supporting one another.
