YMWIC Receives the Comcast NBCUniversal Project Innovation Grant
We are proud to announce that YMWIC is a winner of The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation’s 2022 Project Innovation Grant Challenge. The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation is granting nearly $3.5 million this year to non-profits that are strengthening communities through innovative solutions.

By winning this competitive grant, we have identified projects for positive change. Grant programs like this help us achieve our Mission to empower and prepare economically disadvantaged and historically underrepresented youth to excel and become leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers by driving our local communities forward through innovation and fostering a culture of equity and inclusion.

With this newly-won grant, YMWIC will be able to continue developing and improving our unparalleled after-school programming for our Scholars and alum. We will use some funding for college scholarships to our graduating Scholars meeting or exceeding established criteria. This grant is more than an award to our Program; it is a celebration of our Mission! We are very happy to share this exciting opportunity of growth and recognition and sincerely thank the NBCUniversal Foundation.

YMWIC Celebrates Our First Philadelphia Chapter
This fall, YMWIC is partnering with The School District of Philadelphia to launch the first Chapter in our expansion into Philadelphia. Unlike our existing seven Chapters, the Furness Chapter Scholars will be selected by the administrative team at Horace Furness High School and will meet during normal school hours. YMWIC Program and Site Coordinators, College Advisor, Robotics Coaches, and Corporate Partner Representatives will deliver programming to Scholars on-site at Furness.

Our Philadelphia Chapter Scholars will be able to fully participate in regional activities such as the College and Science Expo, Holiday Giving Event, and Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet. We are determined to remain flexible as the Program grows to meet the requirements of our partner School Districts.

YMWIC Staff and Partners will deliver STEM workshops, robotics, and college preparatory information. Scholars will be able to take part in all YMWIC programs and activities including College Tours, the annual Botball Robotics Competition, the Annual YMWIC Science and College Expos, Junior Chapter of NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) membership, and earning LDUs (Leadership Development Units) to become eligible for college scholarships.

As YMWIC celebrates this new partnership, we look forward to expanding into more schools in Philadelphia!
Scholar Spotlights
Coatesville Chapter: Micah Miles, our featured Scholar in the Coatesville Chapter, is in the 9th grade at Avon Grove Charter School. He earned Distinguished Honors and Honor Roll recognition last school year. A returning Scholar, Micah has most enjoyed the learning opportunities that have been presented to him as a member of YMWIC. He says, "I have learned how to complete a science research project from start to finish and present my findings."

Micah would like to attend the University of Pittsburgh, Harvard University, or Yale University and study to become an Engineer. His advice to new or prospective YMWIC Scholars is, "The program is excellent. There are so many great opportunities that will enhance your academic growth and development." He adds, "YMWIC is a program that provides you with the tools needed for success in your future."

Micah plays basketball and also enjoys a good game of chess. In his free time, he spends time with his family and likes to play video games with friends. Continue doing well, Micah; we’re very proud of you!
Phoenixville Chapter: Mikahel Anselm attends Phoenixville Area High School as a 10th grade student. He joined YMWIC last year. He says that he finds comfort as a member of the Foundation and it has taught him, "In order to get what you want in life, you must work for it; because most of the time, it won't come easily." He feels that it has been important to practice the principles that YMWIC teaches. Those principles will help him and other Scholars hone and increase their experiences with skills they already have.

Mikahel has been an Honor Student throughout elementary and middle school. He wants to become an astrophysicist when he is older because he finds the thought that space is infinite to be intriguing. Currently, he is interested in attending Haverford College.

In his spare time, Mikahel enjoys improving his basketball game and has picked up drumming skills from lessons he took in the past. He also likes to hang out with friends and play video games at home. Keep up the good work, Mikahel!
West Chester Chapter: Spencer Palmer, a 7th grade Scholar at Stetson Middle School, has been a YMWIC member since 6th grade. He made the Honor Roll at Stetson last year. Spencer most enjoys the projects he participates in at the workshops, saying, "The Foundation’s staff and activities have made me more interested in science and how things work." When we asked what he would tell his peers about YMWIC, he replied, "I would tell others that YMWIC is a great Program where you can have fun learning and making friends." HIs advice to younger or new Scholars is, "Keep your head up and hang in there; the hard work will pay off."

Spencer would like to be a doctor or an attorney in the future and envisions himself attending Ohio State University or the University of Pennsylvania. He plays football, runs track and plays the piano. During his free time, he enjoys playing video games with friends, playing outside and watching TV. We’re proud of you, Spencer; continue doing well.

Junior Editors' Report
Design Engineering
by Dayanis Morales Salgado - Norristown Chapter

In the business world, engineering jobs are among the most rewarding entry-level careers, especially with the latest advances in technology. An example of this would be a Design Engineer. Design engineering is all about having ideas and being able to convert those ideas into actual products for consumers to use. Also known as CAD Engineers, they develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing procedures and product designs with the use of both computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software. In addition, they attempt to increase the effectiveness of existing products. Furthermore, they focus on how the goods can be created more smoothly and affordably. Read more.
YMWIC Provides Employment Opportunities to Our Scholars
In addition to providing educational and social opportunities to our Scholars during the Program Year, YMWIC also extends the invitation to select Scholars, who have proven to be exceptional during the previous Program Year, to be hired as Junior Counselors and Robotics Assistants for our Summer Programs. In their roles, they assist the Summer Program teachers and are mentors to younger campers. They accompany the campers on trips and assist with learning activities, while they are gaining valuable employment and leadership experience.

Alumni News
It’s college time! Isabella Mena, 2022 YMWIC graduate, was ready. Bella began her freshman year at Temple University in Philadelphia where she will major in Psychology. She was excited to get familiar with the campus and especially liked all of the food trucks on campus and the great variety of food they offered. She even sent us a picture of her first college meal – from one of the trucks!

We wish Bella the best at Temple – good grades (Dean’s List or President’s Honor List), fun, lots of new friendships, and many more delicious meals.

Featured Volunteer
YMWIC volunteers can be found anywhere, including by chance at big-box home improvement stores. That was the case as Rick Roberts was shopping for a new refrigerator to replace the one that malfunctioned at YMWIC Headquarters. As he described the Foundation and its Mission to the salesperson, Chuck Holt overheard and was very impressed. He also realized that the store would not deliver the refrigerator; so, he introduced himself to Rick and volunteered his services to deliver it.

When Chuck (pictured on left) delivered the refrigerator to YMWIC Headquarters at Cheyney University, Rick shared more about the YMWIC story with him and gave him the grand tour. Meanwhile, he had called Jason Bady - YMWIC Alum and York College of Pennsylvania graduate (pictured on right), who arrived within 15 minutes, ready to help lift the heavy appliance. Read more.
