Gun Safety Awareness PSA

To protect our 53,000 students and families in Clayton County Public Schools, Ms. Mary Baker, District 6 is launching a Gun Safety Awareness Campaign! Through this initiative, Ms. Baker is partnering with Clayton County District Attorney Tasha Mosley, Clayton County Chief of Police, Chief Kevin Roberts and Ms. Daphne Jordan, Packing Pretty Firearms to host a Gun Safety Training and Lock Giveaway. Also, featured in the Gun Safety Awareness PSA video is Ms. Jessie Goree, Board Chair District 3, Ms. Victoria Williams, District 4, and Ms. Joy Tellis Cooper, District 8. National Gun Violence Awareness Day

June 2 marks the second annual observance of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, also known as “Wear Orange Day.” The American Psychological Association reports the following statistics:

In 2013, there were 33,804 firearm deaths in the U.S., and more than 84,000 non-fatal firearm injuries.
Firearms are involved in more than half of suicides and more than two-thirds of homicides in the United States.
There are more than 30,000 firearm fatalities each year in the United States and more than 80,000 non-fatal injuries requiring emergency medical care or hospitalization.
The financial cost of gun violence in the United States was an estimated 174 billion dollars in 2010; this amount does not account for the psychological toll on those directly or indirectly affected by firearm violence, such as those who witness or fear firearm violence in their homes or communities.

Access to a firearm is the common denominator in every firearm-related death or injury. There is clearly no silver bullet for preventing gun violence, but the only way forward is to learn more about the phenomenon in all its diversity and to use this knowledge to evaluate and promote preventive interventions. Otherwise we will never succeed in reducing the tragic harm from firearm violence that we have seen occur in recently.
