An iconic structure in San Bernardino, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge connected communities on the westside for 86 years, serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students, and businesses. With the passage of time, the bridge was showing its age and was in desperate need of improvement. To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to disassemble and reconstruct the bridge.

Construction of the new Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge will reconnect communities on the westside of San Bernardino for decades to come. To facilitate construction of the new bridge, the railroad is making the necessary adjustments within the railyard and the new bridge is anticipated to open in late 2024. During this time, SBCTA is working with local businesses and the community to encourage shopping local. Throughout the year, the outreach team will be hosting information booths at local shopping centers, to provide project updates, encourage sign-ups to the project database, and draw community support around local retail centers, restaurants, shops and services.

To launch the "shop local" message, SBCTA created a bilingual brochure highlighting local businesses north and south of the former bridge. The brochure was recently distributed door-to-door to 7,000 residents and businesses in the local community. The brochure includes a directory of more than 50 local businesses, as well as important updates on the status of project construction. The companion piece to the brochure is the interactive project Google Map. In addition to the local businesses, the interactive map allows businesses the opportunity to promote upcoming deals and specials, highlight services they offer, and more. If you are a business owner and wish to add your business or a special promotion to the interactive map, please contact us at 877-55-SBCTA.

Until the new bridge opens, we encourage the community to shop local and support the businesses that support your community. When you shop local your tax dollars stay local as well, helping to support the local economy and boost tax revenue within the community. ABOUT THE MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT
Since opening to the public in 1934, the Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge (MVAB) was an iconic structure, bridging San Bernardino communities to the north and south and serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students and businesses. The community, like the bridge, saw a great deal of change over the past 86 years.

To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino (City) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to rebuild the bridge. The bridge was disassembled and will be completely rebuilt – a process that will span approximately three years. Improvements at the south end of the bridge will include retaining walls along both sides with 3rd Street closed during construction but opened to traffic permanently after construction is complete. On the north side retaining walls will also be constructed along both sides of the transition between the bridge and W. Kingman Street. Where Mount Vernon Avenue reconnects to W. 2nd Street and W. Kingman Street new curbs and gutters will be installed. Reconstruction of the new bridge will begin in 2022 and the new structure is anticipated to open in 2024.
