KINGMAN STREET RECONSTRUCTION AND WIDENING

WHAT’S HAPPENING: The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge project is nearing completion, with the bridge set to open in late-August. As part of the remaining improvements, crews will widen Kingman Street, install new pavement and add a new curb and sidewalk along the south side of the street.

Crews will reconstruct the street one half at a time and Kingman Street will be open to local traffic only. Residential access to driveways will be maintained, with some temporary restrictions when the street is paved. Access for residents on Kingman Street will be maintained via Cabrera Avenue.

WHEN: Street reconstruction began on Monday, July 28 and will take approximately four weeks to complete. Construction activity will take place weekdays, Mondays through Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Week of August 11 and August 18 – Traffic will shift onto the south side of the street as crews reconstruct the north side to prepare for repaving. Crews will provide ramp access to residential driveways.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Large construction vehicles like compaction rollers, loaders and delivery trucks may be in the area during work hours. You may hear noise or feel vibration related to construction activity. All construction is dynamic, and this schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change.

Visit the project Google map for the most up-to-date closures scheduled and available detour routes.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to rebuild this important bridge and improve the community's infrastructure for generations to come. In the meantime, SBCTA and Omnitrans have partnered to provide a free bus service to the community while the bridge is under construction. The service provides hundreds of trips every month and is free while the project is underway. Lastly, SBCTA has partnered with local businesses to create a bilingual business brochure to highlight local businesses.

ABOUT THE MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Since opening to the public in 1934, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge (MVAB) was an iconic structure, bridging San Bernardino communities to the north and south and serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students and businesses. The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge is a complex bridge replacement project that spans over one of the largest rail yards in the region. An iconic structure in San Bernardino, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge connected communities on the west side of San Bernardino for nearly 90 years, serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students, and businesses.

To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino (City) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to rebuild the bridge. Improvements at the south end of the bridge will include retaining walls along both sides with 3rd Street closed during construction but opened to traffic permanently after construction is complete. On the north side retaining walls will also be constructed along both sides of the transition between the bridge and W. Kingman Street. Where Mount Vernon Avenue reconnects to W. 2nd Street and W. Kingman Street new curbs and gutters will be installed. Reconstruction of the new bridge began in 2023 and the new structure is anticipated to open in 2025.
