CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Week of July 14, 2025

EXTENDED CLOSURE OF 2ND STREET AND

MT. VERNON AVENUE

What: Full closure of 2nd Street from Metrolink Way to Mt. Vernon Avenue and of Mt. Vernon Avenue from 2nd Street to Rialto Avenue, shown in orange in the map below. These closures are needed to allow crews to complete paving activity on 2nd Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue. Local access to the area for residents and businesses will be maintained at all times. Detour routes for all other traffic are shown in green on the map below and signage will be posted.

When: These closures are expected to begin as early as 7:00 a.m., Monday, July 14 and will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through Friday, August 1.

Crews are making local street improvements surrounding the bridge, including new curbs, gutters, and pavement at select locations. This construction activity may require temporary closures and detours. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some temporary road closures may remain in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

UTILITY WORK AT

KINGMAN STREET AND MT. VERNON AVENUE

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Crews have temporarily closed the intersection of Kingman Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue to perform storm drain work. While this work is underway, motorists on Kingman Street will be detoured to use Cabrera Avenue.

WHEN: This closure is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the month of July. Construction hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Barriers were installed to secure the work area, and heavy construction equipment like excavators, compaction rollers, and loaders will be on site to complete the work. Large construction vehicles and delivery trucks may be in the area during work hours and will primarily use 5th Street from the freeway to reach the jobsite.

You may hear noise or feel vibration related to construction activity. All construction is dynamic, and the schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change. Visit the project Google map for the most up-to-date closures scheduled and available detour routes.

ABOUT THE MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Since opening to the public in 1934, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge (MVAB) was an iconic structure, bridging San Bernardino communities to the north and south and serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students and businesses. The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge is a complex bridge replacement project that spans over one of the largest rail yards in the region. An iconic structure in San Bernardino, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge connected communities on the west side of San Bernardino for nearly 90 years, serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students, and businesses.

To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino (City) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to rebuild the bridge. Improvements at the south end of the bridge will include retaining walls along both sides with 3rd Street closed during construction but opened to traffic permanently after construction is complete. On the north side retaining walls will also be constructed along both sides of the transition between the bridge and W. Kingman Street. Where Mount Vernon Avenue reconnects to W. 2nd Street and W. Kingman Street new curbs and gutters will be installed. Reconstruction of the new bridge began in 2023 and the new structure is anticipated to open in 2025.
