CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Week of May 5, 2025

CLOSURE OF 2ND STREET WEST OF

MT. VERNON AVENUE

WHAT’S HAPPENING: On Monday, April 28 crews started work on the storm drain improvements at the 2nd Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue intersection. To perform this work, crews have temporarily closed a portion of 2nd Street west of Mt. Vernon Avenue, and there will be lane reductions and turn restrictions on both eastbound and westbound 2nd Street. Motorists traveling westbound on 2nd Street will only be permitted to turn left onto Mt. Vernon Avenue.

WHEN: The road closure and lane reductions are in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for approximately two weeks. Construction activity is expected to take place weekdays, Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Heavy construction equipment like excavators, compaction rollers, and loaders are on site to complete the work. There are flaggers on site to assist pedestrians. Large construction vehicles and delivery trucks may be in the area during work hours and will primarily use 2nd Street from the freeway to reach the jobsite. Please use caution, follow all construction signage and be aware of your surroundings when traveling around the work area.

CLOSURE AT INTERSECTION OF KINGMAN STREET

AND MT. VERNON AVENUE

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Crews will close the intersection of Kingman Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue for approximately two weeks to perform storm drain work. While this work is underway, motorists on Kingman Street will be detoured to use Cabrera Avenue.

WHEN:  As early as Tuesday, May 6 for approximately two weeks. This closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with construction hours from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

WHAT TO EXPECT: To work on the storm drain, crews will sawcut into the street and excavate the area to make the necessary improvements. Barriers will be installed to secure the work area, and heavy construction equipment like excavators, compaction rollers, and loaders will be on site to complete the work. Large construction vehicles and delivery trucks may be in the area during work hours and will primarily use 5th Street from the freeway to reach the jobsite.

You may hear noise or feel vibration related to construction activity. All construction is dynamic, and the schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change. Visit the project Google map for the most up-to-date closures scheduled and available detour routes.

ABOUT THE MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Since opening to the public in 1934, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge (MVAB) was an iconic structure, bridging San Bernardino communities to the north and south and serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students and businesses. The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge is a complex bridge replacement project that spans over one of the largest rail yards in the region. An iconic structure in San Bernardino, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge connected communities on the west side of San Bernardino for nearly 90 years, serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students, and businesses.

To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino (City) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to rebuild the bridge. Improvements at the south end of the bridge will include retaining walls along both sides with 3rd Street closed during construction but opened to traffic permanently after construction is complete. On the north side retaining walls will also be constructed along both sides of the transition between the bridge and W. Kingman Street. Where Mount Vernon Avenue reconnects to W. 2nd Street and W. Kingman Street new curbs and gutters will be installed. Reconstruction of the new bridge began in 2023 and the new structure is anticipated to open in 2025.
