Please make note of the race start time, 7:30 a.m. Mountain Mist Final Instruction's 2019 Welcome to the 25th Annual Mountain Mist Trail Run. It's hard for me to believe that I had the idea and took the initiative to put together the first ever trail run in Huntsville when I was only 28 years old. Not only was it the first trail run, it was the first race to go beyond the marathon in Huntsville. I had a vision of Huntsville runners getting off the road for a change and venturing out onto the trails, running beyond the marathon. It was also the only trail run in the state of Alabama at the time. I also felt like if I could establish a good trail race in our area, it could possibly influence others to create other trail races in the state. I remember when I first started running the Mountain Mist trail back in the 1980's. I am certain that I was the first person to ever "run" McKay Hollow. I ran the trails of Monte Sano on the weekends, usually alone but I did encourage my friends to join me from time to time. I would do long runs on Saturdays and Sundays on the trails. I would never see another runner on the trails, just an occasional hiker, hunter or even guys on 4-wheelers. After several years of running the trails and more trail knowledge, I put the course together in my mind, laid it out on paper to the Huntsville Track Club board members along with plan of execution, and Mountain Mist was created. 25 years ago, my biggest concern with the race was out of state runners getting lost on the trails, it is still a concern today. We mark it best we can and since the trail is usually so muddy this time of year, it makes it easier to follow as long as you are not in the top 10, just follow the muddy footprints. Weather is the second biggest concern. Seems like we have had a lot of rain lately. But between rains, temps fall and wind picks up thus drying up the ground pretty quick. The weather forecast says one more day of rain for this week! Race day looks good, just Mountain Mist COLD! 20's-40's Another concern I had 25 years ago was this, believe it or not. I was worried that the course was going to be "too easy." Back then, the shortest trail race around the South was Pine Mountain 46.2 mile trail run in Georgia. There were no 50k trail races back then. In fact, the first Mountain Mist was advertised as a 30 mile trail run, it was more like 29.5 miles. It was not until 3 years later that 50k races emerged and Jim Oaks and myself decided that we should go ahead and adjust the course and make it a 50k. That first Mountain Mist, I waited at the top of the infamous "Waterline Trail" for the first runners. To my surprise, when DeWayne Satterfield was the first one to reach me, he was barely jogging, his face full of despair and he was doing what we refer to as "the ultra-shuffle." I just smiled and felt a since of pride, I knew I had laid out a course that would challenge all comers. In my own words "No one is ever let down, just shut down, beaten up, broken and left bleeding." From the beginning, Mt Mist has been a trail run. I always used to put on the paper entry "This is not hike." I still believe that this is a run, not a hike. Over the years, the cut off times were extended and even the finish time cut off was extended. This year, if you are chasing cut off times, you need to know we are strictly enforcing all cut off times. If you do not reach the finish line in 8:30:59, you will not be counted as a finisher. We are not being mean but leaving the finish line up past 8:30:59 prolongs our volunteers day. We get there before 5am and have lots of cleaning up to do at the end of the day. 2 hours is more than enough time to run the final 6 miles so if you are hiking, better get to running if you want to be an official finisher! My vision and goal of a thriving trail/ultra-running community has long been reached. There are multiple trails races of all distance here now along with several trail races all over the state of Alabama including two 100 mile trail races. I like to think Mountain Mist was the leader; it set the stage for trail running in Alabama. Mountain Mist is a classic. I see the hats, infamous skeleton shirts and other Mountain Mist swag at races all over the country. Be thankful you will have a chance this Saturday to experience another Mountain Mist Trail Run. Thank the volunteers who give up hours and hours to make this race happen, there are many. Be thankful for your health and that you are still out there; enjoy "The South's Premier Trail Run." Dink

Altra |
 |
Note from the Altra website: Since the mid 1990's, runners have come to my family's running store in the Wasatch Mountains complaining of knee pain, shin splints, and recurring foot pain. As a competitive runner who ran a world best 2:45 marathon at age 12, I understood their issues. My college research on running injuries, combined with video analysis at our store, made it easy to see that the design of traditional running shoes promoted poor form and excessive impact. For decades, virtually every running shoe has featured pointy toe boxes and heels that were twice as thick and heavy as the forefoot. While shoe companies claimed this design would protect your body from running injuries, the scientific research did not agree. After unsuccessfully lobbying shoe companies for years to change their design, I decided to modify shoes into something that could encourage low impact running technique and prevent injury. Using the research as my guide, I went to work with my trusty toaster oven to try and solve my customers' injury problems. I melted outsoles off of traditional running shoes and removed the excess heel elevation. It was ugly, but it worked! I coined the term "Zero Drop" to describe how the level cushioning no longer dropped from the heel down to the forefoot. We enlisted our local shoe cobbler to modify our customers' current running shoes to Zero Drop. This worked so well at reducing injuries that we had nearly 1,000 customers buy and modify their shoes that first year! Luckily, some of the best and most innovative minds in the running shoe industry contacted us. With their expertise and two years of development, we created the world's first cushioned, Zero Drop shoes. We built them to be optimal for long distances and to avoid the foot problems that are now common with minimalist shoes. Zero Drop was just one of the steps we took to return runners' feet to their natural position. The research made it clear that our shoe needed a toe box that actually mirrored the shape of a healthy foot-imagine that! We built the distinctive FootShape toe box specifically to help alleviate foot problems, including bunions, neuromas, and plantar fasciitis. It also enhances stability and comfort while providing a more powerful push-off. I want to thank the thousands of runners who have embraced our concept and have made Altra one of the Top 10 running shoe brands in only a couple of years. Our entire team races distances from 5k to 100 miles. We also personally test our shoes to ensure comfort-whether running for 30 minutes or 30 hours. Running is a big part of our lives, and I truly believe that our shoes can help people run better and realize that there are zero limits to what they can accomplish.
