Back to School Sunday - August 16
Join us in worship on August 16 as we celebrate our students & teachers kicking off a new school year! Bring your book bags for a special backpack blessing during the service. As part of our Back to School celebrations, our Family Ministries team is collecting supplies to send our Mulberry college students some care packages for the start of the school year! You can drop off supplies in the marked bins in the Atrium & Narthex.

The below is the continuance of an article written by Gary Dunn, “Saturday Mornings In The Sixties”, for the Spring 2012 issue of the Mulberry Quarterly featuring his memories of Mulberry’s Youth Center.

“My attention was on the bowling alley. It seemed everyone could bowl and that’s just what I did. Kids younger than me would be at the other end setting up pins and returning balls by rolling them back up the return rail. We all would take turns at this job, serving the next groups up testing their skills.
Mid-morning was, for me, the highlight of the day. Mr. Ayers would set up the projector for movie time. It would not be a Disney movie or a family picture, but horror. Always horror! Maybe “Dracula” or “Frankenstein vs The Wolfman.” My favorite was “The Creature From The Black Lagoon.” Maybe you know it. Cheaply made, awful acting, black and white, but darn scary to a 12 year old in the dark with a room full of older kids waiting to sneak up behind and frighten the daylights out of you.

After the movies, we could make ceramics with Mrs. Ayers. I think I must have made a hundred ashtrays for my dad. I knew one day I would make the perfect ashtray and he would actually use it. It never happened.
Lunchtime would come an I would settle into one of the cool genuine Naugahyde chairs and open my lunch bag. Egg salad. Oh well, time for my dime.”

Morning Prayer of Petition
Holy One, you are light, and in your presence even night is as bright as day. During dark seasons of my life, help me to turn to you with:
- loneliness, in my life or in the lives of people I love,
- anxiety and mental health challenges that threaten my joy,
- grief in and around me over lost loved ones, relationships, or opportunities,
- anger that threatens to consume me or those I care about,
- addiction that menaces so many people including those I know.
May I learn to trust you as I walk through the dark, knowing that in it you are powerfully at work walking with us. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
Creator God, with a word you called forth light and it shone. With that same word, you continue to shine light in the darkness of my life and the world. May my eyes be opened so that today I can see your light in:
- healing that is happening for people I love
- new beginnings that spring up around me,
- moments of peace and calm when I am stressed and anxious,
- surprise encounters that give me perspective and assurance,
- positive news in a world that seems consumed by negativity.
Continue to help me trust and follow you, even in the dark. Amen.
