A Bicentennial Moment
In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
Some of Mulberry’s pastors experienced dramatic conversions and subsequent calls to what at one time was known as the “Methodist itinerancy." Below are excerpts from The Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgia by E. J. Hammond, published 1935:
Consider Ignatius Alphonso Few, our pastor in 1829, 1830 and 1834. One night in 1825 Methodist preacher Joseph Travis, who was spending the night in Few’s home, fell into debate with the agnostic Few over the Reality of God and the supremacy of faith. Later during the night, Few was taken with an attack of bleeding of the lungs and sent for Travis. “I told you that I was not afraid to die,” he said, “But, oh, Sir, it is not so.” After Few recovered, the wise Methodist preacher, Travis, influenced Few to re-examine his stance. The result was a bright conversion.
Also consider John B. Payne, our pastor in 1844. Payne was the overseer of a plantation. He was an awful drunkard, but had a good Methodist wife. One night in 1834, when attending a meeting with his wife, he united with the church while drunk. Next morning when he was sober his wife said to him, “James, do you know what you did last night?” “No, what did I do?” “You joined the society.” “Did I? Well, God helping me I’ll stick to it.” And he did and soon afterwards became converted and made a useful pastor.

Morning Prayer of Petition
God of Peace, in you we can find a calmness that the world does not offer. In the chaos of our world, I pray for peace and a sense of deep calm for:
- friends who are lost and searching for a way forward,
- people who are suffering and hurting because of injustice,
- those battling physical and mental illness and disease,
- people stuck in place marked by violence, war, and death,
- family and friends who are far away from you.
Give me and all those who need you a day light on anxiety and rooted by and in your peace. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
God who sees, you know all, are in all, and over all. Every day you walk in front of me and behind me, leading me toward still waters. May a sense of calm settle in my soul as I remember the ways that you:
- provided for me today when I was stressed or anxious,
- show your presence to me in surprising moments,
- lead me through difficult conversations circumstances,
- calm my spirit when I get angry or frustrated,
- extend support through people in my life.
May I rest knowing that when life seems out of control, you are in control. Amen.
