A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The following are excerpts from the Board of Stewards meeting, May 7, 1943

“Forty-five members of the Board of Stewards enjoyed a delightful supper served by a Ladies committee in the dining room. The roll was called followed by a prayer from the Pastor.  It was announced that the Parsonage repair work had been completed.  The Secretary also announced that all of the Records of the Church from 1885 through 1942 had been permanently bound in book form for preservation and his report giving full details is attached with these minutes.”

The following is the above referenced report submitted by Hugh Quinn, Secretary, regarding the binding of the Records of the Church:

“After conferring with the Chairman and with the help of the Pastor and Miss Catie Ridley, I have gotten together all of the old Records of The Board of Stewards of Mulberry Church and had same neatly and permanently bound by The J. W. Burke Company. We now have an unbroken record of the Board of Stewards from 1885 to 1942.  From a pamphlet published in 1878 commemorating the Semi-Centennial of Mulberry I copy the following:

‘The early records of the Church have been lost, and those at hand do not go back further than 1851.’

From 1851 to 1885 is a period of 34 years and as these records were in existence from 1851 to 1878, it is to be assumed that they are still somewhere around the church building. The Pastor and I will make a diligent search for these lost records. At any rate, we now have a complete record from 1885 to 1942.”

Note:  At some later time it was reported to the Board of Stewards that after thoroughly searching the Church, records of meetings of The Board prior to 1878 were never found, therefore were assumed to be irrevocably lost.

Morning Prayer of Petition

Eternal God, I thank you for giving me your gift of eternal life beginning now. Help me to fully receive and stand in that gift. Help me to know that even now I have all I need to:

  • find a sense of calm amid the chaos of life,
  • pursue a call to live or serve in a new way,
  • make wise decisions,
  • claim the forgiveness and mercy you offer.

May your gift of life that is already given to me continue to grow until it matures in life eternal. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

Holy God, despite your call to thanksgiving, I often choose to focus on the darkness around me. Lift the heavy clouds surrounding my head and heart, clearing my way to appreciate:

  • moments of strength that steady me,
  • small ways that I experience joy,
  • people who surround and support me when I feel alone,
  • new pathways that are being cleared for me.

Continue to clear my heart to receive the good gifts that you are given to me even now. Amen.
