A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The following are excerpts from the Board of Stewards meeting, June 9th, 1908

“The Board met in the annex in regular session, Chairman Solomon presided. The Treasurer’s report showed that the net indebtedness of the Church on current expenses to be $327.08.

The Secretary of the Bond Fund Committee reported that he held several uncollected notes and asked for instruction as to disposition.  On motion he was requested to hold them another twelve months.

Bro. W. G. Solomon reported that he had presented, on behalf of the Church, a request to the City Council to put down a cement sidewalk in front of the church,  that the Council readily consented to do so  with no charges, and that the work was already in progress.  This very gratifying report received a cordial welcome.

Bro. O. A. Park presented the suggestion that a “Diamond Jubilee Celebration” be held during the coming Fall in commemoration of the founding of Mulberry Methodist Church seventy-five years ago. Bro. Ainsworth, the Pastor, suggest that as this was the bi-centenary year of John Wesley’s birth it might be well to commemorate the two events in one celebration.  On motion a committee of five including the Board Chairman was appointed to investigate the matter, consult with representatives from other Churches of the city as to their co-operation, and report back to the next meeting of the Board.  The following Committee was named:  W. G. Solomon, Ex-Officio Chairman, O. A. Park, I. H. Johnson, C. T. King, W. R. Rogers. On motion the meeting was adjourned.”

"The Saints of Mulberry" Recipes

As part of Mulberry's Bicentennial Celebrations in 2026, we are sharing recipes from some of the saints of Mulberry's past.

Mary Ayers Vacation Bible School Pimento Cheese, circa 1958

  • 10 oz package New York State extra sharp cheese
  • 2 oz (+/-) canned pimento (rinse lightly, drain to remove oil)
  • 1- 5 oz. can Carnation Evaporated milk (can use 4 oz instead of 5 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Duke's Mayonnaise
  • Garlic Salt to taste
  • More regular salt if needed
  • 2 or more drops Tabasco Hot sauce
  • 3 ozs. cream cheese

Grate cheese (a food processor works good for this). Remove half of cheese, Put pimento, grated cheese, half of Carnation milk, Mayo, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, Tabasco sauce in the food processor, mix well. Pour rest of grated cheese over all above, mix all well by hand.

Morning Prayer of Petition

Gracious God, though you offer me endless grace, I find it hard to be patient with others. Shift my heart to a place of compassion so that I can better show grace to:

  • those who have disappointed me,
  • people who anger me,
  • friends who have betrayed or neglected me,
  • persons who see things very differently from me,
  • those I'd prefer not to talk to or interact with.

May I mirror in my relationship with others the grace you give to me. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

Good and gracious God, because I am challenged to show grace, I now remember those who have shown grace to me:

  • pastors, spiritual mentors, and those who have shared your love with me,
  • teachers who have shaped my understanding of the world,
  • parents, friends, and family who have cared for me,
  • co-workers, coaches, and colleagues who have invested in me.

Thank you for surrounding me with your grace through the people you place my life. Amen.
