A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The following are excerpts from The Permanent Building Fund Committee report, given by Chairman W. P. Stevens, to the Board of Stewards, April 30, 1953.

“I am requested to say a few words concerning the efforts of the Permanent Building Committee.  This meeting tonight is not to raise funds, so we all can relax. This committee has had several meetings which your pastor and Chairman of the Board attended, both are members.  We are convinced of the urgent need to complete the constructions of the buildings designed in the original plans of 1926, when the structure you now see it was completed.

You are aware of the need to attract and hold the attention and interest of our young people, and the new facilities are for this purpose.

The new construction will be for the following:

  1. A new kitchen complete with all modern facilities for our ladies who serve us so graciously.  We cannot do too much to lighten their load, show our appreciation.
  2. A new dining room for serving this Board and the various entertainments for young people and other church affairs.  Food interest most of us and if you want good attendance at the meetings, don’t fail to have it at the time for a meal.
  3. To complete the recreation to include facilities such as are available at certain other local churches.  We must attract out members with social features, and at this time we are badly hampered from lack of room, equipment, etc.

Our committee has arranged with Rev. Lourie G. Ray, Pastor of Hyde Park Methodist Church, Tampa, Florida and we have investigated Mr. Ray and all reports are good.  He is to come to our church May 19 and discuss a campaign for raising the necessary funds for the proposed improvements.

Our Pastor will call a meeting of the Board May 19 when Mr. Ray will give full information as to this effort and if you are interested as I think and hope you are, we will all fall in line which will guarantee success. We are all proud of our church, proud to be members of Mulberry.  Let’s make this effort a quick and full success, stepping out ahead instead of a little behind.”

Morning Prayer of Petition

God of despair and hope, endings and new beginnings, death and life, I thank you today for the good news of the resurrection of your son Jesus. Through him, you give life to the world and all that is in it. I lift up to you that in my life and in the world that needs your resurrection power:

  • for my family and those I love who need you,
  • for the problems and injustices that plague my community,
  • for my church and its future,
  • for the world and the chaos that swirls in it,
  • for those anywhere who are rejected, alone, or feel far away from you.

May the first fruits of Christ's resurrection from the dead give me hope for the promise of new life in my world today. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

God of new life, help me to know that you are already at work in my life bringing hope from despair:

  • in my grief, sadness, or disappointment,
  • in my loneliness, isolation, or fear,
  • in my eagerness, impatience, and anxiety,
  • in my confusion, discernment, and decisions.

May your gift of new life feel tangible to me tonight and give me the peace that comes from knowing that in you, there is always a future with hope. Amen.
