A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

Excerpts from Report of Educational Assistant Office, July 13, 1970

“This has been a busy summer of activities for the children and youth of Mulberry. Vacation Bible School had an average attendance of over 100, conducted by a staff of dedicated teachers and workers.

Children’s activities week reached 27 children and 5 of the youth helped with the program. They worked with plastics, beadwork and other crafts projects, visited The Hay House, attended a movie at the Museum and played games here at the church as well as sharing in some worship experiences.

Junior Camp had 22 children and 4 youth. There were planned program activities with free time for swimming, games. These children enjoyed the worship experiences at our worship center on the hill facing the lake.

Field trips for the children were to the Farmer’s Market, the Atlanta Zoo with 28 children attending, 5 mothers plus the bus driver.

As this report is being typed, Youth Activities Week has begun and much work has been done for the various phases of this week of activities. The youth have given many hours in cleaning the coffee house area and getting ready to decorate for the banquet.

Children’s activities on Saturday mornings have been fairly well attended until school was out. but since then attendance has been small making it difficult to do group activities.

Church School attendance is holding about the same but we would like to have a big campaign for Church School attendance in the coming fall.

The need for Middle High counselors is still with us but many teachers’ positions have been filled.”

Day 2. Ephesians 4:2 (Morning); Matthew 18:4 (Evening)

Day 3. Isaiah 66:2 (Morning); 1 Peter 5:5 (Evening)

Day 5. Matthew 5:5 (Morning); James 3:13 (Evening)

Morning Prayer of Petition

God of all grace, your son did not count equality with you as a thing to be grasped. Instead, he willingly emptied himself. May I learn humility in the way of Jesus so that:

  • I might control my anger and frustration,
  • I can seek opportunities to lift others up,
  • I can listen before I speak,
  • I might learn from those around me.

God, may you shape in me a humble spirit and help me to reflect that humility as I encounter others today. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

Gracious God, daily you are working in my life. Give me heart that can receive what you might be doing in my life, and a spirit that is willing to be shaped by you. As I see your work in me more clearly, I thank you for:

  • those who have helped me to learn and grow,
  • people who challenge my assumptions and expectations,
  • challenging situations and obstacles that strengthen my resolve,
  • opportunities and new paths opening up for me,
  • relationships that surround and support me.

God, may I not take your work in my life for granted but instead be marked by gratitude for your presence in my life. Amen.
