A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The below is dated November 14, 1963

“Report to the Official Board from the Music Department:

Enrollment for all choirs in the church now stands at 168. Attendance this fall has been very steady with few absences.  The greatest growth has been in the adult department, with the Ainsworth Choir now divided into two groups – with one singing at 9:00 a.m. service in the chapel.  This choir numbered 18 when we began working with them four years ago, now that number has doubled.

Our Choir Guild has nearly 70 paid members – an increase of 50 over a year ago.

All choirs of the church except the 4 and 5 yr. olds will sing at Westgate Shopping Center during the Christmas season, our Ainsworth Choir being featured for the tree-lighting on Nov. 29th. Hines Causey will be soloist for “O Holy Night.”

The Wesley Choir will give a short dramatic skit for family night next Wednesday, then will also sing for the 9:00 a.m. worship service the following Sunday.

There will be 3 special musical services during December.  All are scheduled for 7:30 Sundays evenings.  Dec. 1st will be a service of Advent music by the Ainsworth Choir with a string quartet from Wesleyan College.  On Dec 15th all choirs will join in the great annual Carol Festival.  On Dec 22nd, our college students for vacation will join the youth choirs for a service of Special Christmas music.

Respectfully submitted,

John Tremaine, Director of Music.”

Morning Prayer of Petition

Empowering God, remind me today that you have given me a spirit of power, love, and self-control. Help me to see that I have all that I need today to:

  • face the unexpected with confidence,
  • persevere through hardship with resilience,
  • deal with difficult people with grace,
  • act even when I am afraid.

Give me courage for living today and help me to remember that you are with me. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, just as you have worked wonders for our ancestors in faith, so you are at work in my life. Slow my pace so that I can stop and recognize how you:

  • surround me with help when I need it,
  • provide moments of joy even in challenging situations,
  • make a way forward when I see dead ends,
  • encourage me through other people.

May I live unafraid, confident in your love and grace. Amen.
