A Bicentennial Moment
In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
On Sunday, May 20, 1945 at 11:00 a.m. services, the celebrating of the payment of moral obligation and dedication of Church School plant was held. The church bulletin for that day noted the below:
“The history of Mulberry Street Methodist Church is filled with many thrilling chapters. However, the purposes of this occasion confine us to the most recent one. The five year period, 1932-1937, was one of the most trying the Church ever knew. A nationwide depression made the debt of the Church almost impossible. However, under the superb leadership of Dr. Edmund F. Cook, then pastor, the Church undertook to lift this burden. On December 16, 1936, the announcement was made that the creditors were most sympathetic and that an amicable settlement had been agreed upon. It was also announced that the sum needed to make this settlement was $63,000.00. On January 17, 1937, the members and friends of the Church gave at total of $46,000.00. Mr. James Hyde Porter, in addition to his liberal gift, agreed to loan the Church the $17,000.00 needed to consummate this settlement. Regular payments were made on the loan of Mr. Porter up to April 4, 1941 when Mr. Porter gave to the church the balance due on the loan, namely, $13, 201.25. When this announcement was made, the Board of Stewards stood and sang, “Praise God From Who All Blessings Flow.” This hour marked the first time in many, many years that Mulberry Street was entirely free of legal debt. In the exultation of this hour and under the inspiring leadership of Dr. George Stoves, then pastor, the Board of Stewards appointed a Committee looking to acknowledgement of the moral obligation of the Church to repay the principal lost by the bond holders in the settlement consummated in 1937.
The Board, on September 5, 1941, by formal resolution, did acknowledge and declare this obligation, and did immediately thereafter appoint the Bond Committee, later named The Golden Rule Committee. Under the leadership of this Committee, the members and friends of the Church have contributed to the redemption of this moral obligation as follows: 1942, $5,500.00; 1943, $6,500.00; 1944, $16,000.00 and 1945, $25,231.29; a total of $53,231.29.
We have had two objectives in paying this moral obligation: One, “As ye would that men should do unto you, do ye also to them likewise.” Two, Fortify the Church in righteousness, undergird her with moral and spiritual rectitude, in order that she may discharge her full duty to God and man. The legal and moral obligations having been met, we gather today to dedicate our Church School Plan to Almighty God.”
