A Bicentennial Moment
In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
“The Great Fire”
Below are excerpts from various church meetings and dates:
“At the Official Board meeting September 26, 1966, the building committee reported that the insurance amounted to $265,000. The first two phases will costs approximately $120,000 which leaves $145,000 for the 3rd phase which included the interior, seats, organ, etc. Our hope of being in the sanctuary Easter of 1967 will certainly not be realized but every effort is being made to have this ready as soon as possible.”
“The Official Board met at a call meeting January 9, 1967. It was reported that to date we are committed to spend $150,000 on contracts. The total collected from insurance, donations, etc. is $300,000. giving a total estimated costs of $530,000. Present plans call for more money than we have available at this time. The Building Committee and the Board of Trustees agreed to raise $225,000 above money now available, or possibly $250,000. A motion was made for the plans for raising additional funds for the completion of the new sanctuary; said motion was seconded and passed.”
“On January 15, 1967 at a Church Conference called meeting, slides were shown which pictured the old church then the new proposed one with an explanation given about each slide. It was stated that the work has been done in 3 phases with phase 1 and 2 almost completed and phase 3 ready to start. The Eugene Stetson family is giving $25,000 to the church to expand the organ so Mulberry will have one of the finest church organs in the State. The estimated costs of the new building will be $530,000 and the church now has on hand $305,000 leaving a balance of $225,000 to be raised. It was explained that the reason for the difference between the insurance payment and the costs of building was due to 5 reasons. One was the cost of complying with Macon’s new construction code increased costs by some $100,000. Two, was where there had been wooden floors, stairs before, all this had to be to steel and concrete and other changes in wiring, etc. which necessitated a greater outlay of money. Three, the insurance company paid for what was lost, and heating and air conditioning units were in the other part of the building and were therefore not destroyed but these units are old, will have to be replaced at an additional cost over and above what the insurance company paid for. Four, the vaulted ceiling in the sanctuary will add to the costs. Five, inflation since the time of the fire has made building costs rise at the rate of about 1% per month. Six, the new organ must have new housing, adding to the costs. It then was proposed that the building committee having spent many hours working on a suitable building program, that the Conference of Mulberry Street Methodist Church approve this action by the Board of Trustees and that the building committee be instructed to proceed with plans as outlined. It was stated that it could be reasonably expected to occupy the new sanctuary by September, 1967.”

Morning Prayer of Petition
Holy One, you are light, and in your presence even night is as bright as day. During dark seasons of my life, help me to turn to you with:
- loneliness, in my life or in the lives of people I love,
- anxiety and mental health challenges that threaten my joy,
- grief in and around me over lost loved ones, relationships, or opportunities,
- anger that threatens to consume me or those I care about,
- addiction that menaces so many people including those I know.
May I learn to trust you as I walk through the dark, knowing that in it you are powerfully at work walking with us. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
Creator God, with a word you called forth light and it shone. With that same word, you continue to shine light in the darkness of my life and the world. May my eyes be opened so that today I can see your light in:
- healing that is happening for people I love
- new beginnings that spring up around me,
- moments of peace and calm when I am stressed and anxious,
- surprise encounters that give me perspective and assurance,
- positive news in a world that seems consumed by negativity.
Continue to help me trust and follow you, even in the dark. Amen.
