A Bicentennial Moment
In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
Below are excerpts from a Resolution passed August 4, 1949:
“The Mulberry Street Methodist Church which we know and love is the fruit of wise planning, able leadership and God working through all the means made available to Him by His people here. Those who have gone before us have wrought well and we have entered into their dreams and labors. Mulberry has stood on this corner for almost a century and a quarter proclaiming the Good News of a Savior to Mankind.
However, the Mulberry of tomorrow depends upon how well we plan today. It is a fact worthy of praise and commendation that your Board of Trustees has already been looking into the future of Mulberry and has purchased adjoining properties and it is hoped that the remainder of a lot, adjacent to the church property and fronting 1st Street, can be purchased. When this is done our church will own the property a city lot wide extending from Mulberry to 1st Street paralleling original property lines. Although the present need not demand such a move it insures future needs as Macon and Mulberry continue to grow.
Along with this there are those who envision some permanent improvements to our present physical plant, namely a modern dining room and kitchen, a chapel for small meetings, weddings, etc., more facilities for Ladies Adult classes, and adequate recreation hall and center for entertaining our youth.
The late chairman and beloved member of this Board, James H. Porter, was greatly interested in such a project and could have had such in his mind in making a bequest to the church this week as he knew of other gifts which had been made for this purpose.
Now that such physical needs for the future of our church are evident: the policy of beginning now in accruing money to this and other purposes is the part of wisdom: likewise the direction of this gift and this end, we think, would encourage others to give.
There be it resolved that this Board request our Board of Trustees and the Quarterly Conference to establish such a fund with the Porter bequest and gifts already received as the first gifts to this fund. Be it resolved that at such time as this improvement shall be made that some appropriate part be dedicated to the memory of our beloved friend and benefactor, James Hyde Porter. Be it further resolved that this Board go on record a desire to make such contribution to this fund from regular operating budget from year to year as balance at the close of fiscal year would allow and hoping that individuals would annually contribute to this fund as God gives them increase.”

Morning Prayer of Petition
God of all good gifts, you surround me with blessings that I can't count or repay. May your outpouring of blessing on me inspire me to be a blessing in the lives of others. May you turn my heart toward your needs in the world that I may:
- use my gifts and capabilities to impact other people,
- grow in financial generosity towards your church and other worthy missions,
- share my struggles and failures in a way that might help others,
- be present with others and offer my time where it can make a difference.
Help my life to be a mirror of your generosity towards me. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
Good and gracious God, you have been generous to me and provided for me in ways that I did not deserve or expect. Today may I call to mind the ways you have blessed me:
- through people who nurtured and supported me when I needed it,
- with mentors and others who have invested in my growth,
- through surprising opportunities or resources that I didn't expect,
- by guiding me through challenging times with resilience and perseverance.
Thank you, God, for generously providing for me. Thank you for the ways you have gone before me, for your presence today, and for your promises in the future. Amen.
