A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The following are excerpts from the Board of Stewards minutes, May 8, 1908:

“The Board met in regular session in the Annex. Chairman Gerdine presided, a hymn was sung and Bro. J. M. Pound led in prayer. Seventeen members were present.

The Pastor read two interesting letters from an anonymous correspondent donating $100 to be used in liquidating the unpaid assessments of worthy members who will notify the Pastor of their inability to pay, the members applying for the benefit of said fund and the donor to remain a secret, except to the donor himself and the Pastor.

Bro. Ainsworth announced that there were at least 50 names still upon the books of the church to whom letters to other churches had been granted, no such entry appearing upon the church register opposite such names. He further reported that he had made correction in every case where sufficient information could be obtained from an inspection of the books and register.

Bro. W. G. Solomon announced that the sexton of the cemetery had reported that Mulberry Street church owned a lot in the cemetery, it having been donated by the city to the church some years ago, and that the said lot now needs attention and care.  Upon motion by Bro. W. S. Brooks, it was resolved that Bro. Solomon be instructed to confer with Mr. Hall and arrange to have said lot attended to, and that he be authorized to call upon the Treasurer for the necessary funds to repair the same.

On motion for the action of Bro. C. E. Harter in paying Miss Ella Opperman $5.00 for playing the organ and deduction same from Miss Wilder’s salary was confirmed.

On motion by Bro. A. S. Hatcher it was resolved that the Pastor and Secretary confer together and assess new members, notifying them of the assessment made and requesting reply as to whether same was satisfactory, and also notify them as to our mode of making assessments and the plan by which their payment is expected.

On motion, the meeting was adjourned.”

"The Saints of Mulberry" Recipes

As part of Mulberry's Bicentennial Celebrations in 2026, we are sharing recipes from some of the saints of Mulberry's past.

Pear Relish by Emma Richardson

  • 1 10 to 12 quart bucket hard pears
  • About 7 or 8 medium onions
  • 6 bell peppers (half red if available, otherwise use small amount of pimento for color)
  • (3 to 5 hot peppers if desired)
  • 2 pounds sugar - 4 cups
  • 5 cups vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon each celery seed, mustard seed and whole allspice (or 1 tablespoon mixed pickling spices)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric (for color)

Peel, core and grind pears, also grind peppers and onions. Mix all this together with other ingredients in VERY LARGE cooking vessel. Stir and cook slowly for about an hour uncovered.

Ladle into hot pint jars and seal immediately.

This amount makes 16 to 17 pints.

Morning Prayer of Petition

Holy Wisdom, you offer me a pathway that leads to life but in stubbornness, I consistently choose my own way. Turn me around and loosen my grip on:

  • the false belief that I must do everything myself,
  • the hard-heartedness that keeps me from reaching out to others,
  • the selfishness that prevents me from serving others,
  • the materialism that lulls me away from faith in you,
  • the myth that busyness is a badge of honor.

Help me to be more obedient to your teaching and wisdom so that I may walk the narrow path that leads to life. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

Loving God, you are always at work for my well-being, not harm. Help me to trust that your commandments are for my good. Prick my consciousness so that I may see:

  • the people to whom you are calling me to be more attentive,
  • the areas of my personal life that I too often neglect,
  • your nudges and promptings that I am ignoring or neglecting,
  • the joy and rest that you are offering to me.

Shape me in a spirit of obedience to you and help me to remember that your precepts are perfect. Amen.
