A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The following are excerpts from The Board of Stewards meeting July 10, 1905:

The Board met in the annex pursuant to the call of the chairman and Bro. Solomon, Chairman, presided over the meeting.

The subject of engaging a choir for the coming year was brought before the board.  Bro. W. R. Rogers, Jr., made a brief statement by which he recommended that a choir be elected as follows:

An organist for the term of 12 months at $25.00 per month...... $300

A soprano          “                8       “     at $25.00 per month...... $200

An alto              “                8       “     at $12.50 per month...... $100

A tenor              “          8       “     at $12.50 per month...... $100

A bass                “                8       “     at $12.50 per month...... $100

A cornetist        “              12       “     at $10.00 per month...... $120

                                                                          Total  ……..…    $920

Or, if the music committee thought better, to make the contracts with singers for nine months instead of eight, which would make a total cost of $982.50.  He suggested the names of Prof. Ezerman and Miss Wheeler of Wesleyan College Faculty for the petition of organist and soprano singer, and on his motion, the Board requested that the Music Committee confer with the Pastor and elect a choir along these lines.

On the motion of Bro. Park, the Pastor was granted a vacation beginning August 1st.

The matter of improvements to the front of the church was brought up but after some discussion, it was decided to let it go over until the fall.

"The Saints of Mulberry" Recipes

As part of Mulberry's Bicentennial Celebrations in 2026, we are sharing recipes from some of the saints of Mulberry's past.

Whole Cranberry Sauce by Emma Richardson

  • 1 pound fresh raw cranberries (pick over and remove stems and bad ones)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large firm apples (preferably York)
  • may add a few dashes of cinnamon

Mix the cranberries, water and sugar and stir while heating on medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. Then add the apples which have been cut in fairly small pieces; I usually half them, then quarter, remove the core, then cut them in eighths - or cut the quarters crosswise. Cook the whole mixture, covered, on low heat until the berries pop and the apples are fork tender. Then allow it to cool and then refrigerate until ready to serve with your turkey and dressing.

My mother always added apples to her cranberry sauce and I never think of making it without the apples, as I think it adds much to the texture and taste of the sauce.

You may want to half the above recipe, as it makes a good bit.

Another good addition is to very thinly slice pieces of orange peel or lemon peel. You can cut the orange in quarters, take out the inside and eat it, then thinly slice the peel. For lemons, squeeze the juice out for something else, then very thinly slice the peel. If you are adding these, I always mix the sugar, water and peel and cook it about 10 minutes or so in order to tenderize it. You may need to add a small amount of water, as it tends to boil away, but don't add too much. Then add the cranberries and apple and proceed as above.

My favorite trick is to prepare the peels whenever you have a good orange or lemon, then put small amounts in a small baggie and freeze them. I also add lemon and orange peels to jam or preserves.

Morning Prayer of Petition

Holy One, each day you invite me to turn around, confessing my sin, and allowing you to forgive and redeem me. Today I ask you to help me with those places in my life where I harbor sin, forgetting to trust and follow you:

  • in my personal habits and behaviors,
  • in my relationship to money and material things,
  • in my commitment to justice and equity,
  • in the way I treat others, even those I don't know well,
  • in my faith, when I neglect to make time for you.

Forgive me this day, and free me to live more fully in the freedom and goodness that you offer. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

God of new beginnings, every time I make a mistake, there is an opportunity to learn. Every time I fail, there is a chance to grow. Every time I fall short of what you want for me, I experience more sharply your mercy. Call to mind for me the ways that today you:

  • showed me grace through other people,
  • strengthened me to do what was right and good,
  • prompted me to take responsibility for my behavior,
  • opened my eyes to a reality I was neglecting to see,
  • freed me to live without guilt.

As you heal and restore me, may I be molded more and me in the likeness of Jesus. Amen.
