A Bicentennial Moment

In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.

The following are excerpts from minutes of the Board of Stewards, Sept 9, 1901.

“Board met in the annex at 7:30 p.m., Chairman Solomon presided.  19 members were present. On the motion of the Chairman was requested to make further investigation into the matter of having our Church represented in a certain Church directory which was been gotten up to be placed in the principal hotels of the city, and given special authority to contact on their behalf of the Board for the same if he thought it best.

The Pastor then read a letter which had been received from Bro. W. A. Hemphill, a noted singer and choir master, then same being in effect an inquiry as to what his chances were to secure employment along these lines with our Church.  Chairman Solomon then made a review of the entire musical situation, calling particular attention to the fact that we would soon have to engage an organist for the coming year, and also secure one as choir master and called for action on the matter.  On the motion of Bro. W. R. Rogers., Jr. the pastor was requested to take up correspondence with Bro. Hemphill and ascertain upon what terms his services can be secured. “

The following is an excerpt from the Board of Stewards minutes, Oct 8, 1901.

“Dr. Pinson read a letter recently received from Bro. W. A. Hemphill which stated that he had made arrangements for the coming year and consequently could not accept an offer from us.

Bro. C. E. Harter of the Music Committee recommended that Mr. W. H. Makin be offered $15 per month to serve as choir master during the remainder of this year.  On a motion the music committee was authorized to make the offer and in the event of it being declined was requested to ascertain what terms would be acceptable to him.”

Morning Prayer of Petition

God of forgiveness and second chances, I confess that I do not always love you or love others as you would have me. With humility, I confess:

  • for words of mine that have hurt other people,
  • for the selfishness and greed that I cling to,
  • for relying more on material wealth than on you,
  • for the times I have chosen cynicism or negativity over hope,
  • for ways that I have failed to help those around me.

Forgive me and stir up in me a desire to serve you with a new spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude

Ever-present God, you are always ready to receive me, giving me new perspectives on my life. Turn me around so that today I can:

  • see where you are working in my life,
  • notice the ways you are offering me opportunities,
  • receive the ways you are seeking to help and heal me,
  • reconnect with people who love me.

As I turn toward you, I pray that you would receive me once again and fill me with your spirit. Amen.
