Rev. Drew Willard, Biblical Storyteller, will be returning to Mulberry this Sunday, August 3 to share the story of the Gospel in his own unique way. This program will take place during the Sunday School hour at 10 am in the Fellowship Hall. We hope all Sunday School classes will plan to come hear Rev. Willard speak. If you aren't part of a Sunday School class, we've got room for everyone in the Fellowship Hall and welcome you to join us! | | Several of our youth attended a River of Life mission trip in Columbus, GA earlier this July. They joined with other churches across South Georgia to serve the community & worship together. Over the next several weeks, we'll share video testimonies from our youth where they share about their time together and the impact they felt. This week, Kate Evans shares about her favorite moments from the trip. | | |

- Donate money to help cover the cost of food
- Bake or cook something delicious
- Join Payton and hang out with the Wesley students that evening
Payton will also be preaching that night, as incoming Wesley director Rev. Hannah Pye will be on maternity leave. If you’d like to contribute or come along, please contact the church office or reach out to Payton directly. Let’s show these students some Mulberry love!

A Bicentennial Moment
In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
"The Great Fire"
On Monday, April 26, 1965, a raging fire at Mulberry Street Methodist Church roared through the attic and roof of the sanctuary, totally destroying that part of the church.
It was considered a “5 general alarm fire” with 15 units of the Macon Fire Department battling the flames for more than two hours, successfully preventing the spread to other parts of the church.
The fire was restricted mainly to the ceiling of the sanctuary, attic and roof. Damage in the floor level of the sanctuary was due primarily to falling debris which filled aisles, pews and the balcony.
The cause was contributed to the use of a blow torch by a painter on the outside of the church underneath one of the stained glass windows. It was being used to burn off old paint on the wooded framing around the windows and sparks entered a crack on the side of the window framing and spread upward through a narrow vertical opening, being fed with combustible materials located inside that space. The fire reached the attic and gained headway because this opening was concealed. The flames were first noticed by someone leaving The Grand building who reported that “it looked like heat waves on the roof of the church.”

The sanctuary was considered a total loss but fortunately the stained glass windows except for minor damage survived the event. However, a week later, a large beam from the burned out ceiling fell to the floor, bounced upwards, then through two of the stained glass windows. A spokesman from the Payne Speirs Stained Glass Studio of New Jersey credited the Macon with fireman with saving the windows during the fire by sprinkling water against the glass and the lead surrounding them. He said “if the firemen had used the full force of water on the windows, they would have shattered them and it was their good work that saved these beautiful windows.” He estimated that the restoration of the windows would cost at least $30,000.
Fortunately, no life was lost in the fire and the extensive educational building, youth center and chapel adjacent to the sanctuary were spared.
On that same Monday night, the official Board of Mulberry met and began work on plans to rebuild the church sanctuary. On May 2nd, the Sunday following the fire, Mulberry began their usual 11:00 a.m. worship service in the Fellowship Hall with hundreds of folding chairs set up for the occasion.
To be continued.

Morning Prayer of Petition
God, today I make the active choice to receive your gift of rest. To join you in delighting in the world you made. Help me to be obedient to your command by naming:
- what is clattering in my life, distracting me from you,
- what feels like toil and work, draining my energy,
- what I am trying to control that I can let go of,
- what is betraying my ability to feel joy.
Today help me to remember that my life is more than what I produce, to be aware of what distracts and drains me, and to find opportunities to rest in you. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
God, as the day draws to a close, I stop to see and name where you have been at work in my day:
- for the moments of surprise,
- the moments of learning,
- the moments of assurance,
- the moments of relief and help.
Thank you for being present with me even what I am not present with you. Help me to trust you more fully, and to find my rest in you. Amen.
