A Bicentennial Moment
In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
On February 3, 1949, the Board of Stewards reported the following:
“In 1941, Bro. Wm. B. Burke was in China and Bro. F. B. Waterman accepted gifts from various churches and friends here in Macon and carried a special account in the bank sending checks from time to time to Bro. Burke. Bro. Burke and Bro. Waterman have both passed away and Mrs. Waterman, in winding up the Estate of Bro. Waterman, found a balance in the bank (Special Burke Account) amounting to $377.50. It is very evident that Bro. Burke either lost this check or had some Chinese friend cash same, and in the chaos of war it was lost as this check has never been returned to the bank. Mrs. Waterman has issued a check payable to Mulberry Street Methodist Church for $377.50, with the request that $77.50 be sent as a gift to Carlisle and Ruth Phillips, our Missionaries in China, and that $300 be applied on their salary this year."
It was also understood that in the event this check ever showed up at the bank that Mulberry Street Methodist Church would protect Mrs. Waterman.
The Pastor announced that a "formal order has been given for the William B. Burke Memorial Windows at a cost of $3,750.00, on which there is cash on hand of $600.00.
The salary paid our Missionaries in China is $1,800 so the Pastor’s plan is to try to raise $5,000.00 by special offering on Easter Sunday. The window in question will not be available for installation before March, 1950."

Morning Prayer of Petition
God of new birth and second life, second chances and new beginnings, on the cusp of the ending of one year and the beginning of another, I invite you to continue your work of making me new As I enter a new year I pray:
- for that which I need to leave behind in order to embrace something new,
- for big decisions that I need to make,
- for areas of my life where I hope for new opportunities,
- for habits that I hope to prioritize,
- for areas of my faith that I want to grow in.
As you make all things new, I pray that your Holy Spirit would work in me to reshape me, that I may live in a new way for you this year.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
God of endings and beginnings, you have been at work in my life, and there is new work yet ahead that you intend to do in me. As I reflect on the ending of one year, and ready myself for that which is new, I see the ways that you have been at work in my life. I name and thank you for the ways that you used this past year to:
- teach me,
- challenge me,
- care for me,
- bless me,
- strengthen me.
As I move forward in faith to a new leg of my journey, I take with me all that you have and are doing in my life. I pray that you would give me the eyes to see and the heart to receive the ways that you are daily at work for me and for my good. Amen.
