In anticipation of Mulberry’s upcoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2026, the Leonard Hill Cochran Historical Room presents a moment of Mulberry history.
Below are excerpts from the Macon Telegraph Newspaper, Sunday, April 4, 1926.
“Program is Complete for Mulberry Street Church Centennial.
CELEBRATION TO BEGIN NEXT TUESDAY NIGHT.
Observance Will Be City-Wide, Former Pastors To Take Leading Parts.
EVENT TO RUN FOR WEEK
Church to Erect New Building: Beginning Campaign During Celebration.
The Centennial celebration of Mulberry Street Methodist Church which begins Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. will mark one of the outstanding events in Georgia Methodism as well as the history of Macon. Here was cradled the first activities of the Methodists in the middle Georgia conference which met here in 1831. Beginning with a society of 18 members, three of which were men, Mulberry Street Methodist today numbers approximately 2,300 members including some of the most prominent men and women of Macon. Now active spreading from the mother church are First Street, Centenary, Vineville, Cherokee Heights, East Macon, Second Street, Newberg and Ingleside Methodist churches. During the week pastors prominent in the history of the church who contributed largely to the present attainments, will return to take part in the celebration which is city-wide and congregations and ministers of not only the various Methodist churches but also the Protestant denominations of the city will meet each evening from Tuesday through Sunday to participate.
The Centennial will mark the beginning of an effort to build a new Sunday School building to take care of the large Sunday school attendance.
Various committees created for the occasion were the Centennial, Pageant, Finance, Music, Invitations, Publicity, Decorating and Building. Each nightly celebration features pastors and musical programs from Macon Baptist churches, Christian Church, Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church plus other Methodist churches as Cherokee Heights, Vineville, First Street, Second Street, East Macon, Centenary, Ingleside, Newberg. At the final celebration Sunday at 11:30 a.m., April 11th a, a Centennial offering will be taken for the new building. And that Sunday night, an organ concert it to be held at 8:00 p.m. with the benediction given by Dr. Alonzo Monk, Mulberry pastor from 1893 to 1896

"The Saints of Mulberry" Recipes
As part of Mulberry's Bicentennial Celebrations in 2026, we are sharing recipes from some of the saints of Mulberry's past.
Rebecca Smith's Squash Puppies by Emma Richardson
- 4 cups fresh yellow squash 12 cups cooked and mashed)
- 1 medium onion
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
- 1 slightly beaten egg
- Self-rising cornmeal (see directions for amount)
- Crisco for frying
Slice squash and onion; simmer in small amount of salted water until tender. Mash and drain well (very important). Add Worcestershire and egg; salt and pepper to taste. Now add enough meal to make a stiff mixture which will drop from a spoon - a cookie scoop works well. Drop into very hot oil or shortening (as in making hush puppies) and fry until a golden brown. Drain on several thicknesses of paper towels. Serve warm (Canned squash may be used.)
This recipe may be halved or doubled according to the number of people served, but be sure to have plenty as they are delicious and will disappear fast.

Morning Prayer of Petition
Eternal God, in your sight a thousand years are but a day. I'm learning more and more every day to trust your timing in my life. Cultivate in me:
- patience for that which I must wait for,
- closure for those things that are ending,
- expectancy for that which I hope for,
- resilience for living in the in-between time,
- persistence for the work that is not yet finished.
Holy God, help me to trust your timing and to know that the time spent working and waiting is not in vain. Amen.

Evening Prayer of Gratitude
Mighty God, each day you offer me a new perspective on my life. In this moment, enlighten my spirit that I may perceive the ways you are at work, even when the progress is not as fast as I may want. Thank you for working today:
- in my stresses and anxieties,
- in my frustrations and setbacks,
- in my relationships, even those that are hard,
- in my responsibilities and commitments.
God, give me patience to persist as I wait for life to unfold and develop for me. I have faith that you are with me. Give me a tangible sense of your presence in my life. Amen.
