How do we determine the salt/sand ratio?
The salt sand ratio is between 3 to 5 %. This is to stop the sand from freezing, sand is used on lower classes of roads to supply traction.
What is the difference in care on paved roads vs gravel?
The Township of Mulmur has two different levels of service
1.Gravel Roads - Track Bare to snow packed,
2.Paved Roads – Centre Bare to Bare
Why can’t you use pure salt?
The use of pure salt can not be used on Gravel Roads as it will melt the surface of the road turning it into mud.
Pure salt cannot be used on low volume paved roads either. To make salt work properly a steady flow of traffic is required when the air temperature is above - 18 degrees.
What is the purpose of a grader?
Graders are used for two purposes in the winter.
1.They are used as snow plows the same as the trucks.
2.They are used to ice blade the gravel roads, ice blading is done by using special blade that have 1 inch teeth that brakes up the hard packed snow or ice and allows the tire to grip the gravel/snow packed surface of the road.
