Winter weather is around the corner and County departments came together on Monday, November 25th, for a Winter Weather Preparedness meeting. At the meeting, people involved in a variety of roles highlighted their plans, needs and opportunities for the upcoming winter weather season. Multnomah County's Health Department, the Department of County Human Services, the Office of Emergency Management, County Security and the National Weather Service all participated with presentations relevant to their work.
For Multnomah County staff, partners and the general public, taking on response roles is a critical piece to preserving the life and safety of our most disaster-vulnerable community members. Standing up multiple emergency shelters requires not only identifying appropriate facilities and staffing the shelters themselves, but also filling the roles behind the scenes in logistics and wrap-around services including passenger transportation.
The shelter General Staff role is the center of the County’s response. Responsibilities can range from welcoming guests and serving food, to cleaning up and distributing supplies. Meanwhile, there are Logistics Support roles that ensure supplies and materials are gathered, distributed and set up to support the County's response. Another key piece of our severe winter weather sheltering response is the Passenger Transportation Unit. This unit includes a roster of drivers, navigators and dispatchers ready to move county residents to warm spaces during severe winter weather.
If you're interested generally in serving in an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during winter weather, contact em.dutyofficer@multco.us and we can help you find an appropriate role.
