NEW ORLEANS - A second location of LGD Creole gem The Munch Factory is once again serving diners in Gentilly, just a few blocks from where the restaurant first got its start eight years ago.

The City of New Orleans announced in July that it awarded a contract to operate the clubhouse restaurant at the Joseph M. Bartholomew Municipal Golf Course in Pontchartrain Park to Alexis and Jordan Ruiz, owners of The Munch Factory. It’s the second location of the restaurant, which relocated to the LGD from Gentilly in 2017. That year the Munch Factory was also tapped for a slew of restaurants set to inhabit the new much-awaited, and much-delayed, MSY airport terminal.

Among fans of the Munch Factory’s modern comfort food are are Jay-Z and Beyonce, who visited last year after their concert and sampled the signature oysters Gentilly and bread pudding. The Ruiz’s other Creole-style offerings are duck and waffles, shrimp and grits, and a customer favorite, the Munchin’ wings. At the golf course location, the Munch Factory’s menu is tailored to breakfast through early dinner and will offer more sandwiches, salads and wraps.

The Munch Factory at Pontchartrain Park (6514 Congress Drive) is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday.

Jordan Ruiz’s love of cooking began in the home. “My mom cooked every day. I learned a lot from her,” Jordan said. He spent time at Commander’s Palace before heading off to the Culinary Institure of America in Hyde Park, New York which broadened his skill set profoundly. “They taught me French, Italian and South American cooking. And also some Japanese, Chinese and Indian – I’ve tasted a lot and just had a broad exposure to ingredients and methods through my culinary school experience,” he said. “They also tried to teach Creole and New Orleans at the CIA but they just couldn’t capture it. Not like I knew it from here.” Jordan always knew how he wanted to cook. The CIA and stints with big operators like Commander’s and restaurants in Las Vegas galvanized it. The Munch Factory is his way of bringing these classic Creole flavors into the modern age with an emphasis on fresher ingredients and a wider world view.

Munck Factory - Oyster Gentilly

The Munch Factory is owned by Chef Jordan Ruiz who studied at The Culinary Institute of America in New York and his wife, Alexis who runs the front-of-the-house of the Contempo Creole Cuisine restaurant. The Munch Factory takes pride in their freshly made creations. Every sauce and dish -- such as the Blackened Redfish with Crabmeat and Fines Herb Chicken -- are made to order. Familiar comfort food gets refined culinary tweaks and a strong dose of Creole flavor.

The Munch Factory offers full catering services and accepts reservations for groups.

"The fines herb chicken is another house favorite, with two sauteed chicken leg quarters doused in thick, herbal cream sauce that resembles a down-home beurre blanc. Ribs are fork tender and slathered in tangy, burgundy barbecue sauce with satisfying garlicky flavor." - Sarah Baird, food critic

SEPTEMBER 20, 2018 - The day after husband-and-wife powerhouse, Beyonce and Jay-Z rocked the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with their "On The Run II" concert, they rocked the world of Alexis and Jordan Ruiz, owners of The Munch Factory on Sophie B. Wright Place.

The two superstars stopped in for lunch that Friday (Sept. 14), after Thursday's concert in New Orleans.

"The night before I was joking with the staff, saying 'hey, we're going to stay open late because Jay-Z and Beyonce are looking for a spot after the concert,'" said Alexis Ruiz, who owns the restaurant with her husband. "They all laughed."

The next day a call came from a friend that at first seemed unbelievable to Ruiz.

"A friend of mine called and said Beyonce was looking for a place to have lunch," she said, adding the friend told her to be on the look-out for any unknown numbers popping up on her phone.

The Ruizes have a friend, Sean Frazier, who has been coming to The Munch Factory for years. He told someone in the couple's circle about the place, Ruiz said.

To give the couple privacy, the restaurant owners decided to close for a couple of hours.

"They didn't ask us to close," Ruiz said. "We thought that would be best because we didn't want a scene. We didn't want anyone to infringe on their privacy.

"They had a lot of seafood," she said. "They especially liked the oysters Gentilly, the shrimp and grits and the bread pudding."

For her husband, chef Jordan Ruiz, it was exciting to see his food appreciated by the celebrity couple, she said.

"It was just enough that they came, but it mean a lot that they really did enjoy it," Alexis Ruiz said. (The couple's publicist asked that she not quote the couple directly.)

She described two celebrities as being "unbelievably kind," noting that they posed with the staff pictured in this Tweet below: From left, Lauren Sanders, Alexis Ruiz, Ryan Williams, Beyonce, Jay-Z, chef Jordan Ruiz and Jason Bignar.

The staff hasn't had much experience with celebrity customers, Ruiz said.

"We thought it was crazy and exciting when (then-Mayor) Mitch Landrieu came to eat," she said. "We were all posing with him."

To be singled out meant a lot to the restaurateurs.

"That was what was so touching," Ruiz said. "There are 1,400 plus restaurants in the city and they came to little old Munch.

"I told Jay-Z, it means a lot that you guys are here, but I feel that way about everybody that comes to our restaurant. He really seems to appreciate that comment and I meant it," Ruiz said, adding, after a beat, "but come on this is like the king and the queen of world."
