Community Television

On November 7th, 2025 Freeport Historical Society welcomed public historian Kathy Smith. Smith spoke on the influence of Lawrence M.C. Smith and Eleanor Houston Smith, who led early preservation efforts - from Wolfe's Neck to the Harraseeket Historic District, the Pote House, and Pettengill Farm - and how their legacy continues to shape preservation and research today. Watch this event at the link above and check out all FCTV3 videos on our YouTube page.

Public Works

The Public Works Department would like to pass on a few friendly reminders for the winter season:

  1. Freeport residents are allowed two 5-gallon buckets of sand per storm. Sand is available near the Public Works building at 7 Hunter Road.
  2. No parking is allowed on public streets nor in turnarounds during winter storm events - please keep streets and turnarounds clear of vehicles (including trailers, campers, etc.) during a storm. Our winter parking ban is in effect starting November 1, from 11 pm to 7 am, and will continue until April 15. For more information, see Town Ordinance Sections 48-208 and 48-209 (PDF).
  3. For residents who park vehicles in driveways, please keep sidewalks clear so our sidewalk machines are not restricted in doing their job.
  4. Please do not push snow into sidewalks or public streets as this is not only against Maine state law, it is also costly and time-consuming for the Public Works Department to send vehicles and manpower out to go back to clean up a street or sidewalk.
  5. On a final note, please do not pile the snow from your driveway over the exposed ends of your driveway culvert - this tends to block the culvert from draining properly, allowing the snow to freeze inside the culvert. As the surrounding snow starts to melt, the water has nowhere else to go and will either back up onto your property or onto the roadway creating a water and ice hazard.

Recycling / Transfer Facility

As planned, the Silver Bullet recycling container on Hunter Road (near the Public Works building) has been removed. Watch the Town Council meeting discussion which in part led to this decision.

The Silver Bullet container on West Street (at the Public Safety building) will remain for now. To keep this option available, please help us by:

  • Flattening cardboard boxes before recycling
  • Not leaving items outside the container
  • Only recycling approved materials
  • You can find a full list of acceptable items at ecomaine’s Recyclopedia.

For the best recycling experience, we encourage you to use the Transfer Station compactor at 100 Hedgehog Mountain Road, open Wednesday–Saturday, 7:00AM – 4:00PM. This method reduces transportation costs and environmental impact by compacting materials before they’re sent to Portland—saving money for the Town and taxpayers.

Thank you for helping Freeport stay clean, green, and sustainable!

Freeport Community Library is Going Green(er)!

We’re excited to announce that FCL has joined the Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) and is working toward Sustainable Library Certification. This program helps libraries strengthen environmental stewardship, economic responsibility, and social equity. Our efforts align with Freeport’s new 10-year Comprehensive Plan and the Climate Action Plan, which prioritize sustainability. Over the next 18–24 months, we’ll collaborate with staff, trustees, town partners, and community members to complete action items across 13 categories—from resilience planning to collection management. Stay tuned for updates!
