June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities living in Canada.

The Municipality of Brighton respectfully acknowledge that it is located on the Mississauga Anishnabeg (A-nish-in-naw-bek) territory and is the traditional territory of Mississauga. The Municipality of Brighton also acknowledges the Mississauga Nations are the collective stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity, and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. For generations, many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities have celebrated their cultures, languages, and heritage around this time of year, recognizing the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

Municipal Department News and Updates

The team at the Municipality of Brighton is committed to working together to meet the needs of our residents, visitors, and those who choose to invest in our area. We dedicate ourselves to providing superior services to customers.

For more information about each of our departments, visit the Municipal Services page on our website.

Brighton Fire and Rescue

Brighton Fire and Rescue crews recently took part in hands-on pumper training along Lakehurst Street, sharpening the skills that are critical in real-world emergency response.

Pumper trucks play a vital role when fire hydrants are located far from the scene of a fire. In these situations, crews rely on the pumper apparatus to move water over long distances through extended hose lines. By positioning a pumper truck in the middle of the hoseline, firefighters are able to boost the water supply and maintain proper pressure from the hydrant all the way to where crews are actively working.

During the training, our crews practiced setting up long hose lays and managing water supply across multiple points. Crews were strategically positioned along the hose line, working together to monitor pressure, adjust valves, and support the steady movement of water. This coordinated effort ensures that even in challenging conditions, teams can deliver the water needed to safely and effectively suppress fires.

Brighton Fire and Rescue would like to extend a sincere thank you to Jim Melvin for generously allowing the use of his property for this valuable training exercise, as well as to the residents of Lakehurst Street for their patience and cooperation throughout the training. Their support helps make this important preparation possible.

On June 4, Brighton Fire and Rescue welcomed the SkyHawks to Brighton for a special performance ahead of their Northumberland Mutual Aid Meeting.

The Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks, are one of Canada’s most recognizable demonstration teams. Known for their precision skydiving and aerial displays, the SkyHawks perform at community events across the country, showcasing incredible skill, teamwork, and military professionalism.

This year, Mutual Aid celebrates 75 years in Ontario. Mutual Aid in Northumberland County is a cooperative partnership between local fire departments and emergency services, designed to ensure communities receive the support that they need during large-scale or complex incidents. When resources in one municipality are stretched, neighbouring departments step in—providing personnel, equipment, and expertise to help protect lives and property.

Thank you to the community for sharing in this excitement and celebrating this important milestone with us last evening!

Parks and Recreation

June is Parks and Recreation Month

Join us in celebrating the spaces and people that bring our community together. From our parks and playgrounds to arenas and trails, our Parks and Recreation team is proud to support healthy, active living for all.

Parks and Recreation provide core municipal services that:

  • Support physical, mental, and social well-being
  • Foster inclusion, accessibility, and community belonging
  • Protect and enhance green spaces and public assets
  • Contribute to economic vitality and community pride

We encourage Brighton residents to embrace the opportunities for physical activity, exploration, and community connection that our parks and recreation facilities and programs offer.

Public Works and Environmental Services

Work continues on the final phase of the County Road 64 reconstruction project in Brighton, with crews now active from both the north and south ends of the corridor to help keep the project on schedule.

Current work includes: Underground infrastructure installation, temporary water services for homes, asphalt removal, and identifying and preparing residential service connections.

We have received inquires regarding survey markers and property bars along the route. Prior to construction, a licensed Ontario Land Surveyor was retained to confirm property boundaries and document all property bars within the project area. If any property bars are disturbed during construction, the bars will be replaced by a licensed Ontario Land Surveyor at the conclusion of the project.

Thank you to residents, businesses, and motorists for your continued patience and cooperation as we build a better road ahead.

Residents are encouraged to stay up to date on construction schedules, detours, and project updates by visiting: Northumberland.ca/CR64.

Construction has started on County Road 64 (Prince Edward Street) in Brighton.

A full road closure is in effect between Elizabeth Street and Harbour Street, with detours in place. Local access will be maintained for businesses.

Please plan ahead, follow posted signage, and allow extra travel time.

Paving along the Harbour Street corridor between Edgewater Drive and Walas Street was completed on May 29. Construction is scheduled to resume in late June between Walas Street and Cedar Street.

  • Local traffic will continue to have access to homes throughout construction
  • The contractor will maintain uninterrupted garbage and recycling collection
  • Traffic detours for the County Road 64 / Prince Edward Street Reconstruction Project will remain in place, with Raglan Street continuing to serve as the primary east-west detour route from Harbour Street
  • Local businesses on Harbour Street will remain open and can be directly accessed via Walas Street or Marina Drive

This project is part of the 2026 Capital Budget and includes full road urbanization, with the installation of new curbs, storm sewers, sidewalks, asphalt, water services, and sanitary sewer repairs.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as these important infrastructure improvements are completed.

Economic Development and Communications

As we head into June, the Economic Development and Communications team continues to support local businesses, promote tourism, and enhance community engagement across Brighton.

As we welcome the warmer weather and longer days, it brings an opportunity to enjoy local beaches, boating, fishing, golfing, cottaging and camping, we also enter construction season. While these improvements play an important role in enhancing Brighton’s infrastructure, safety, and overall services, they can also create short-term challenges. Detours and changes in traffic patterns may disrupt the flow of customers and pose temporary inconveniences for both residents and local businesses, especially on Loyalist Drive (Industrial/Business Park) and Harbour Street.

The Community Events Committee's Concerts in the Park begins on June 3 at Memorial Park and continues all summer long every Wednesday evening 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and don't forget about Canada Day in Brighton on July 1 in King Edward Park with activities beginning at 10:00 a.m. and concluding with fireworks at dusk.

Enjoy your summer!

Yours in Economic Development,

Ben Hagerman

Manager of Economic Development and Communications
