Jess Herbst, Former Mayor of New Hope, Returns to Fix Town Finances

In 2017, Jess Herbst became the first openly transgender mayor in Texas and the second in the country. Although she had 15 years of experience on the town council and success as mayor, Herbst lost in the 2018 mayoral election because of her identity.

The unfortunate effect of that for the Town of New Hope was that Herbst's opponent blew through a quarter of a million dollars in contingency funds and raised taxes for the first time in over twenty years.

Herbst is running again in 2020 to return fiscal responsibility to the council of her rural community.

She is an advocate for equity for all people, no matter color, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. Herbst was a leader in the fight against the 2017 Texas bathroom bill and is a member of the board of directors for Equality Texas.

HOUSTON CHRONICLE ENDORSES STACI WILLIAMS FOR TEXAS SUPREME COURT
for Texas Supreme Court Justice

Judge Staci Williams, 61, has long experience as a trial judge and if successful in unseating incumbent Justice Jeff Boyd, would bring to the Texas Supreme Court badly needed diversity and an approach that focuses on building consensus through persuasion.

For those reasons we endorse her campaign.

She would be the first Black woman on the court in its 174-year history, but Williams insists that diversity is not by itself sufficient rationale for supporting her, and we would agree.

“We need someone experienced and someone qualified, and I just happen to be Black,” she told the editorial board.

What is a County Tax Assessor-Collector?
Texas homeowners are aware of the main function of a Tax Assessor-Collector (TAC), which is collecting property taxes. Each city, county and school district contracts with the county TAC office to collect taxes on their behalf. If they didn’t do this, you’d be writing up to 5 or more property tax checks to different entities.
