Applications Being Accepted for Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund

Applications are being accepted for the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, the national program intended to support infrastructure projects that mitigate current and future climate-related risks and disasters triggered by natural hazards.

Eligible projects include new construction of public infrastructure and/or modification or reinforcement of existing public infrastructure, including natural infrastructure, that prevent, mitigate, or protect against the impacts of climate change, disasters triggered by natural hazards, and extreme weather.

As part of the Government of Canada Adaptation Action Plan, released alongside Canada’s first National Adaptation Strategy, the fund received an additional $489.1 million in funding in November 2022. This additional funding, combined with the remaining program funding, makes more than $1 billion available for this application intake.

Applications are being accepted until 3:00 p.m. EDT on July 19.

Strategy, Data, and Governance

February 22, 2023

10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Elected officials are chosen by the people to represent public interest. In a way, they are the “board of directors” of a public organization. Many have limited governance experience before taking office. How can elected officials govern more effectively while accomplishing community goals?

In the webinar Strategy, Data, and Governance, explore the dynamics between elected officials and administration, and discover leading practices in strengthening the governance capacity of elected officials.

15 New Projects Receiving Funding Through Targeted Sector Support Initiative

Fifteen new municipal projects are receiving a combined provincial investment of more than $500,000 under the Targeted Sector Support (TSS) Initiative.

The TSS Initiative supports municipalities partnering to strengthen their core municipal responsibilities through projects focused on good governance, capacity building, and regional co-operation. Funding is provided through cost-shared grants, covering up to 75 per cent of eligible project costs.

Projects are reviewed and approved by the TSS Steering Committee, which consists of representatives from SUMA, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), the Saskatchewan Association of Northern Communities (New North), and the Ministry of Government Relations.

This is the fourth round of projects approved under the TSS Initiative, which is funded through the Municipal Revenue Sharing Program. The next intake is anticipated to open in March.

ADVOCACY UPDATE

Pilot to Remove Barriers to Interprovincial Food Trade in Lloydminster a Step in the Right Direction

SUMA recognizes the impact interprovincial trade barriers have on border communities. We have discussed these issues with both federal and provincial governments, and we are pleased to see the beginning of progress with the announcement of a two-year pilot to remove barriers to interprovincial food trade in Lloydminster.

“Removing barriers to interprovincial trade in border communities like the City of Lloydminster assists our local businesses and ensures residents have what they need,” Gerald Aalbers, Mayor of Lloydminster and SUMA’s Vice-President of Cities, said. “SUMA has been advocating for a reduction in red tape for all border municipalities in Saskatchewan, and I am pleased with what this pilot means for Lloydminster and the potential for other municipalities along our provincial borders."

The pilot, administered by the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, will ease the challenges faced by food businesses in Saskatchewan and Alberta for trade into all of the city of Lloydminster. The goal is for safe food to move into and within the city as if there was no provincial border.

Meet the Keynote and MC

Keynote - Cody Demerais

Cody Demerais is an award winning Métis entrepreneur born and raised in Prince Albert. He is an author, motivational speaker, and community advocate. But Cody has not always been on the path he is now.

He spent years feeling as though he did not belong. As he tried to find ways to “fit in”, Cody experimented with drugs and alcohol, and he dealt with intense substance abuse issues as well as depression. Following a life altering car accident that left Cody with PTSD, guilt, and anger, he tried to take his own life.

Cody now shares his past so others don’t have to learn the hard way as he did.

In his keynote address, Cody will use his own experiences to share a message of resilience, focusing on the mental health and addictions crisis in Saskatchewan.

Convention MC - Joan McCusker

Through her experiences as a teacher, mom, world champion curler, Olympic gold medallist, and CBC commentator, Joan McCusker has collected a number of observations on the attitudes that propel ordinary people to build extraordinary lives. Growing up near Saltcoats and now a Regina resident, Joan also knows the truly extraordinary things the people of Saskatchewan are capable of.

Her own story is an example. She was part of a curling foursome that dominated the world of women’s curling in the 1990’s; with her teammates, Joan won three Canadian and three World Curling titles and in 1998 won Olympic gold in Nagano, Japan.

Joan’s presentation style is light and humourous, but her message is clear: attitude, team, and leadership is everything. We guarantee there won’t be a dull moment with Joan as MC of the 2023 SUMA Convention.
