Municipal Update: March 10, 2020

Self-generation projects can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offset or reduce your power use and costs. They also interact with the provincial power grid, which is why an interconnection study is needed for any self-generation project. On March 17 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Cory Gelowitz, SaskPower's Customer Relations Business Manager (South), will share information on:

• The different types of self-generation;

• When and why an interconnection study is needed;

• What ‘system protection’ is and why it’s necessary;

• Factors that affect the cost and schedule of interconnecting a project;

• How to interconnect – the process and where you can find more information.

Win $25,000 for Your Community Health or Wellness Initiative

As part of the 2020 Grey Cup Festival, Richardson Pioneer has announced six communities will receive a $25,000 grant through the Richardson Pioneer Community Celebration.

The grant is for an existing health and wellness initiative that focuses on sport, culture, or recreation. Examples include upgrades to a recreation centre or investments in a community park.

The competition is open to Saskatchewan villages, towns, small cities, rural municipalities, and First Nations.

To enter, a community representative is invited to fill out an application and submit

a 1,500-4,000 word essay on why their community should be chosen, a description of your event, what the money would be used for, and a budget outlining total funds needed and total funds already raised; and
photos and/or video showcasing the community's passion, commitment, and support for the initiative.

A selection committee will narrow down the applications to eight communities. The eight communities will be announced on April 1, and a public online vote will determine the final six winners.

Applications are being accepted until Friday, March 27 .

Invasive Species Workshop

The Saskatchewan Invasive Species Council is hosting a one-day workshop in Saskatoon on March 24 . The theme of the workshop is "All Things Invasive" covering topics from plants, insects, mollusks, ‎fish, animals and fungi - all things invasive. The workshop is $20/person and lunch is provided.

Plan for the Future - Engage Students with the Municipal Career Spotlight

The Government of Saskatchewan has developed the Municipal Career Spotlight Guide to assist administrators and elected officials in hosting their own Municipal Career Spotlight, an event designed to engage, educate and promote interest of high school students in municipal careers.

Often communities/schools will host career days for students where youth get to learn about different jobs and what they need to study to get those jobs. The guide has tips to help plan your own career day to showcase municipal careers, such as an administrator, public works staff, recreation staff, planning and development staff, etc.

The guide contains activities that will appeal to students such as a classroom learning session, hosting a mock council meeting and touring municipal facilities.
