Book Reviews
Gone Too Long
By Lori Roy
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Beth is 10 years old and home alone in Simmonsville, Georgia. Despite warnings from her mother, she opens the door to a stranger who has been distributing Ku Klux Klan fliers. He kidnaps her. No ransom, no body-just disappeared from sight.
Seven years later Imogene Coulter returns to Simmonsville to bury her father, a powerful leader of the local KKK chapter. Imogene was opposed to her father's Klan involvement and struggles with past memories and their estrangement. While arranging his affairs, she goes to his man cave shack. When she discovers a locked room in the basement, her surprise turns to shock when she finds a small boy-alive-inside.
The two timelines converge when Imogene decides that in light of the secrets she uncovers, she must solve the disappearance of Beth. Ms. Roy expertly moves the plot between the two stories with brief chapters tracking the historical rise and fall of the Klan's popularity and fortunes. It is striking that the story occurs in present day and that the KKK is very much alive.
Ms. Roy is a superb writer who meticulously establishes place and characters in her books. It is no accident that she is a two time Edgar Award winner. Gone Too Long is a superbly written thriller with an engaging and complex plot. As with her other books, the story stays in the reader's head for a long time.
Highly recommended.
