Miami Noir
The Classics
Edited by Les Standiford
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
|
|
The title MIAMI NOIR THE CLASSICS seemed like a contradiction. So many of the crime novels set in Miami are set in relatively recent times. It is difficult to imagine that there is much that would classify as classic. However, the excellent introduction by Les Standiford sets the time frame perfectly.
Mr. Standiford discusses the challenge of compiling this collection. Miami crime fiction is long on novels and short on short stories so he utilizes a couple of excerpts to set the stage. One is an excerpt from Douglas Fairbairn’s STREET 8, a novel that Mr. Standiford classifies as a prototype for much of the crime fiction that came after the 1970s. A wonderful read that propels the collection to writers like Charles Willeford and Elmore Leonard.
The first section of the collection titled “Original Gangsters” starts with a story from Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Who knew that she wrote short crime fiction in 1925? The 30's follow with stories from Damon Runyon and Brett Halliday.
There are many entries from the decades spanning the 90’s into the beginning of the 21st century. Vicki Hendricks GATORS written 20 years ago is as enjoyable a read today. In fact, despite the age of some of the stories, they are superb in describing the dark side of Miami noir.
A reader can pick up the collection and start with a known author or a “new” find. These well written stories form a kaleidoscope of the gritty side of life in South Florida. Crime readers will enjoy these stories and find more authors to read.
MIAMI NOIR: The Classics is a wonderful read.
