Book Reviews
Murder at Kingscote
By Alyssa Maxwell
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
The arrival of Alyssa Maxwell's latest in either of her series is always a welcome event for this reader. I greeted the arrival of Murder at Kingscote with delight which increased as I read.
The story begins in July, 1899. Emma, the editor-in-chief of The Newport Messenger, is covering a very special event, Newport's first automobile parade. A road accident occurs when Philip King, possibly the city's first drunk driver, hits a wooden figure on the obstacle course.
Later, at a dinner party hosted by Ella King at Kingscote, Emma and Derrick Andrews, her boyfriend, are dining when Ella's son, Philip, still drunk, arrives. Then, the Kings' butler is found pinned against a tree in front of Philip's car,
Was it an accident? Emma receives a message saying that the butler may have been murdered because of his propensity to bully staff and take advantage of the young maids. Emma investigates the connections between a competing heir to the King family fortune, a mysterious child, an insane asylum inmate, and boxing rings. She races against time while a killer remains free.
Alyssa Maxwell does a wonderful job of conveying what I imagine is the flavor of the times. The reader can smell the salt air and feel the warmth of it on her face, can picture the ancient automobiles and the socialites of Newport dressed in their finery for the auto parade. She leads us to immerse ourselves in this era, a time before before two World Wars and two pandemics.
Her characters are contemporaries of my great-grandparents, yet their concerns seem very real and accessible to me. Emma's struggles to be taken seriously as a news reporter in a man's world make compelling reading in our own time, considered in the light of the progress made in women's rights, and the progress yet to be made.
All in all, I found Murder at Kingscote a most enjoyable read. It makes it hard to wait a year for the next in the series. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

A Song for the Dark Times
By Ian Rankin
Reviewed by Stacey Schwartz
John Rebus has retired due to health issues, moved to a first floor flat and is reviewing old unsolved murder files. Rebus’s daughter Samantha calls late at night pleading for his help in locating her missing partner Keith, a WWII history buff researching a local internment camp (Camp 1033) that housed captured soldiers. Rebus knows chances are Keith may be dead and Samantha will be the prime suspect. Rebus sets out to the coast to search for the missing man.
Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke and Detective Inspector Malcolm Fox set out to solve the seemingly motiveless murder of Saudi Salman bin Mahmoud, a young, rich international student in the carpark of a carpet warehouse in Edinburgh. Soon these two cases start to overlap due to several key witnesses such as Big Ger Cafferty and numerous suspects.
Rankin has done a lot of research, but doesn’t overwhelm us with it, so it forms a very believable background without bogging down the story. Rankin’s characterization and dialogue are, as always, excellent, the sense of place is very well done, and I found this a really good read.
A Song for the Dark Times is complex mystery with lots of twists and turns and Rankin easily transports me back into Rebus’s world and makes it hard for me to return to reality.
