The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education administer the Scholars for Excellence in Child Care (SECC) program, which awards scholarships to provide eligible child care professionals the opportunity to complete coursework in childhood development and early education.
This program helps individuals continue higher education after completing an initial child development credential.
Murray State College graduate, Tamela Cheadle-Lewis, is one of the award recipients. She credits the SECC program as a game-changer.
"I was very much appreciative of receiving this scholarship, Tamela said. "I was able to finish my degree after 26 years. I was able to go back to school and officially complete my degree, and be able to say “officially,” I have a degree! Not many people can say those words and without the help of this scholarship, I’m not sure that I would have. Just applying for it gave me the motivation to go on and complete my associates degree."
I thoroughly enjoy being able to help child care providers find a way to gain an education so that they can better care for children," said Heather McClean, Murray State College Scholars of Excellence Coordinator. "The students who I work with are not typically traditional college students. I love to see them accomplish things that they never dreamt they could."
