Greetings!
We wanted to give you an update about the museum! We miss you all and we hope you are staying safe and well. We were able to obtain a loan and a grant for this time of crisis so we are able to have Kristen and me continue to work. (At least for now.) I come to the museum most days and am doing a lot of administrative work. Kristen is at home working on our newly purchased data base, virtual classes, and creating a video version of The History of Art. We normally would have been presenting this history to the fifth graders during their field trips, but in lieu of that we will send the video to their teachers in the hopes it will become part of their online curriculum.
Giving Tuesday was moved up from November and it is May 5. I know a lot of organizations have created campaigns around this date. I just want to say that if you can help support the museum, this would be a really good time to do so. In the 41 years the museum has been around, it has never faced an obstacle like this one. Some of the foundations withdrew our grant requests because they diverted what would have been funds for arts and culture, to other more pressing needs. And we had to cancel two fund raisers, Dancing with the Grants Pass Stars and Art in the Garden. We are being very conservative and frugal and we are hoping to survive this wrinkle in time.
Stay safe and well - and hopefully we will be able to see each other soon.

A message from our board president, Pam Geye
|

We have been so fortunate that this stay at home month has been so beautiful. My husband and I have been busy outside maintaining our property and planting our garden. I hope you have been able to get outside and get some fresh air as well.
The Board of Directors and our Executive Director, Hyla, had our meeting via Zoom this month and are trying to make sure that the Museum stays healthy and strong during this unexpected shutdown. We are trying our best to make plans for the future but are really having to wait and see. Hyla and Kristen have been working on classes and lectures that will be available online. We want to make sure that we are still active and available even though we have to be closed.
It really is a time to re-evaluate our priorities and be grateful for all the great things in our lives. Stay safe and stay well. We hope to see you all again real soon.

The museum is closed and the walls are bare. We were supposed to mount an exhibition for
Bruce Bayard
this month. We have postponed his exhibit for next year. In the meantime, we have left Virtually the Best of the Best up on the museum website home page. The video turned out great and if you didn't have an opportunity to watch it - here's link.
(So far we've had over 800 views of the video!)

The community virtual art show that we sent out this week was very popular. In fact, some sales were made because of the connections. We want to do this again. All artists in the area are welcome to join this time.
Send me the art that you are creating during your period of isolation.
Please send it to: hyla@gpmuseum.com
Send it as a JPG or PDF. Label the file with the title of the work, the medium, and a price if you would like or mark it NFS. Also list contact information like a website so people can find you. I'll publish all of that with your image. Please send it to me no later than May 8 and I'll publish it for Mother's Day, May 10.
Thanks!

2020 Music at the Museum Schedule
|
|
Unfortunately we had to cancel the concerts for a few months. We are hoping to have some virtual concerts soon. When we do we'll let you know. In the meantime, enjoy listening to Rupert Wates. He just wrote this song and uploaded it on April 30. (He's been composing during this "time.") He's been one of our favorite musicians and we hope he will be here in the fall. This song is about a child born during the pandemic. It's beautiful.

Gallery One is not open right now - but walk on by and see the interesting art that was submitted for this month. The theme is "Spring 2020." The art in the front window shows how our artists feel about the current situation.
A few of them are shown below.
If you would like to find a Mother's Day gift in the Gallery, let us know by calling 541-479-3290. There are great "MOM" gifts like jewelry, ceramics, paintings, photographs, baskets, and more. Gallery Manager, Cindy is happy to open the Gallery for you and you can shop safely.

The Barnes Foundation is an art collection and educational institution promoting the appreciation of art and horticulture. The Barnes was founded in 1922 by Albert C. Barnes, who made his fortune by co-developing Argyrol, an antiseptic silver compound that was used to combat gonorrhea and inflammations of the eye, ear, nose, and throat. He sold his business, the A.C. Barnes Company, just months before the stock market crash of 1929. Today, the foundation owns more than 4,000 objects, including over 900 paintings, estimated to be worth about $25 billion. These are primarily works by Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modernist masters.

Help keep the museum free for all!
|
|
The museum does not receive government funding (other than grants from the Josephine County Cultural Coalition). So keeping the doors open depends on grants, donations, memberships, sponsorships, and rent from the street level businesses (Shoefly and Gallery One). You can do one time donations and you can also do monthly donations. It's easy - and we appreciate you very much!
On additional side benefit - the foundations who offer grants are very pleased to see community involvement. Your donations show your support!

If you get this far:
I sometimes put something interesting at the very end of eNewsletters. Here's a fun view of gerbils in an art gallery. Someone had way too much time on their hands.
