Greetings!
You would be surprised at how much goes on at the museum even though it isn't open. We still have to plan for the future and take care of the business at hand. We actually had a "live" board meeting in June and everyone sat a safe six feet apart. Planning is tricky because everything is so uncertain. We are hoping to open the museum sometime perhaps in August? We would be displaying a part of our permanent collection. We are also hoping to have the annual membership exhibit and we were thinking we could have it earlier than usual - perhaps starting in October. We will be limiting the number of submissions to one per artist. We are hoping to have lots of participation so be thinking about what you want to submit if you are one of our artistic members.
Scroll down and check out the schedule for the month of things we can do, like a few art classes and a virtual poetry sharing.
In the meantime - stay well and safe. We miss you all!

A message from Board President, Pam Geye
|
|
I’m not sure how July got here so quickly. I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. Since I have been staying at home I’ve been busy working in my garden and we are starting to reap the rewards. Last night we feasted on Cauliflower, Onions, and Bok Choy, all from the garden. Asparagus and Peas are done for now but I’ll be harvesting the first of the Zucchini this afternoon. The Plucots are heavy on our tree and I’m hoping that the birds might share some with us this year.
The Board has been busy planning for these uncertain times. This last month we elected officers. I will continue as President for another year and we welcomed Penelope DiGennaro as our new Vice President. Penelope has a great deal of experience and she will bring much to this position. We also welcomed Amy King as our new Secretary. She has filled in for this position quite a bit and it is now officially in her very capable hands. We also re-elected Melissa Hayes as treasurer. Before Melissa took on this role, we had had a really tough time trying to fill this office. Melissa is defining this role and we are all excited about her wealth of knowledge.
The Exhibition Committee has been working hard on rescheduling exhibits and planning for the rest of this year. We will keep you all updated on when we plan to open. We all miss visiting the Museum and can’t wait for her to be back in all her glory.
We have also been discussing possible fund raising ideas for the rest of the year. As you know we had to cancel Art in the Garden and Dancing with your Grants Pass Stars. We have talked about a possible online auction, but would love to hear any ideas and suggestions you might have for how the museum might raise some much needed money.
As always, thank you for your loyal support of this great gem, all of you make it possible for us to provide our community with a gathering place for art, poetry and music.
Take care.

Virtual Exhibits from the Past
|
|
Since the museum walls are bare at the moment, we thought it would be fun to remember exhibits from the past. Here is a short video highlighting some of them.
|
|
And, if you want to see more of any of the exhibits, you can find them archived on the museum website by

Thank you!
Many thanks to Jim Harman, Janet O'Donovan, and Carol Genovesi & her garden club for weeding the back of the museum. It is so much better now. There are actually some interesting plants there. Hopefully, we can keep it relatively weed free from now on.

One of our board members, Laura Acosta, shared a picture of her amazing cactus in bloom.
She says that like all cactus in the desert, the flowers only last a few days. This is the most blooms she has ever had.

Artists Susan Burnes and Janet Higgins have a special exhibit at the Rogue Gallery in Medford. Susan is the head of our exhibition department and Janet is the chair of Black, White, & the Blues.

Virtual Events and Things

This is the presentation given to Fifth Graders on their field trips. It's a really interesting overview of 40,000 + years of art history presented by Kristen O'Neill. Kristen's own art can be found in Gallery One.

In part one of a two-part class we will meet up in the park and go over tips and techniques to gather the information we will need to create a painting from our sketches. We will cover:
• Thumbnails & composition. How to translate what you see into blocks of information that can be organized for maximum impact.
• How to break up the space into foreground, middle ground and background. And when you may not want to do that.
• Capturing details that you will want later. With a focus on textures and shapes
• How to use your smartphone smartly! Make the most of this tool and know when to ignore it.
The goal of this class is to have an abundance of information for the second part of the class, not a finished sketch. We will have thumbnails, rough sketches, texture & plant information captured. All to give us ideas to play with back in the studio.
The second class uses the artwork we created in the first part of the class, we will create paintings. Class will be taught in acrylics. An emphasis on color theory and composition will guide us in taking our raw materials and turning them into paintings.
Ideally, we hope to hold this in the museum, but will have the class on Zoom if we are not able to open. Due to social distancing needs, class size is limited.

Help keep the museum free for all!
|
|
The museum does not receive government funding (other than grants from the Josephine County Cultural Coalition). So keeping the doors open depends on grants, donations, memberships, sponsorships, and rent from the street level businesses (Shoefly and Gallery One). You can do one time donations and you can also do monthly donations. It's easy - and we appreciate you very much!
On additional side benefit - the foundations who offer grants are very pleased to see community involvement. Your donations show your support!
|
|
Monthly donations are so amazing. They add up quickly. Just $10 a month means a donation to the museum of $120 for the year. That's fabulous. Please consider this option. The payments safely charged to your credit card.

If you get this far - looking back....

There are so many forms of art and so many places for art. This artist was highlighted on CBS Sunday Morning last week. He creates mosaic potholes. Well, actually he covers potholes with his mosaics. It's fascinating.
