Greetings!

Our fundraiser is over. Thanks to the many of you who bid and now own wonderful art. You all helped us raise a little over $10,000 which was nice. Thank you.

Now, we are featuring the first of many fabulous exhibits for this year, Betty LaDuke's Garden of Delights. When people come up the stairs, we frequently hear, "WOW!" When a group of fifth graders were here for a field trip, we talked about perception and I asked them what one word they thought in their head about what they saw. Three students answered with: "Wow," "Whoa," and "Cool."

Betty will be giving a talk on Saturday, March 7 at 2pm. Her stories are always interesting, so do mark your calendar. It's free.

What makes one painting immediately engaging while another feels flat-

even when the subject is simple? In this Open Palette session, we’ll explore how artists use composition as

a creative tool, learning to transform everyday scenes into strong, expressive images through intentional choices rather than rigid formulas.

Together we’ll look at how placement, cropping, value design, and visual flow guide the viewer’s eye and create movement, clarity, and focus.

Instead of relying on prescribed rules, you’ll learn how to make practical compositional decisions that support your own artistic voice -

whether your style leans toward realism, impressionism, or abstraction. Through guided exercises and hands-on studio work, students will

experiment with arranging and simplifying visual elements to strengthen design before painting begins. You’ll leave with a clearer

understanding of how composition supports everything that follows- making your work feel more intentional, dynamic, and personal.

Each Open Palette session builds on previous ideas while remaining accessible to newcomers.

A few years ago we discovered Exhibitions on Screen and have been showing their movies ever since. They NEVER disappoint. The films capture the life and art of an artist and they highlight exhibits in museums - usually in Europe.

We charge $10 for each film and we supply chocolate, snack, and beverages. AND we have more cushions for the chairs. Come and enjoy!

Every once in a while, changes must be made. This year we have decided that we cannot have Art in the Garden. We had trouble gathering enough gardens and the timing just didn't work. SO, since next year would have been our 30th Anniversary of sponsoring this event, we decided to cancel this year and make next year spectacular. Save the date: June 5 & 6, 2027

This month, every square inch of exhibit space is being used. The library has an interactive exhibit featuring a commemoration of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The exhibit is a combined effort of BASE and the Oregon Remembrance Project. The BASE youth painted three bus seats and the rest of the exhibit contains explanations and invited people to share their dream.

JoAnn Stevens teaches a series of "How to Paint Like a Famous Artist." This class was about Modigliani. Her next class on March 28 is about Cezanne.

Here are some of JoAnn's students coping some of Modigliani's portraits. The results were fabulous.

Everyone had a good time and a good outcome!

First Friday in February featured RCC's massage therapy students.

There were seven students who offered chair massages. They will be back for First Friday on March 6. The massages are free and everyone who enjoyed one was very happy. Try it!

Massage can be very relaxing, but it is also good for your health.

The students will be at the museum from 5pm - 8pm.

This First Friday - March 6 - come and find the museum's Leprechaun. There's also one in Gallery One. The museum and Gallery One have donated great prizes for this event. It's going to be very fun.

Mark Rothko

September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970

He was an American abstract painter. He is best known for his color field paintings that depicted irregular and painterly rectangular regions of color, which he produced from 1949 to 1970. Although Rothko did not personally subscribe to any one school, he is associated with the American abstract expressionism movement of modern art.

Alysa Liu won an Olympic Gold Medal with this performance. We teach our fifth grade students that the definition of ART is COMMUNICATION. We also teach them that all forms of artists are communicators. This beautiful ice skating program is gorgeous to watch - but I wonder if there aren't elements of communication buried in her expertise. Watch.......
