Greetings!
Last month I challenged everyone to bring a friend to the museum. I think many of you actually did that because we had a great number of visitors during the Burnes and Higgins Exhibit. It's perfect to see familiar faces and also delightful to meet new people. Thanks for your help with that (and please keep bringing more people for us to meet!)
This fall we have lots of activities lined up. The Fifth Grade Field Trips will be starting again on October 12, we have new workshops to help you be creative, an art film, and a new event to help celebrate International Animation Day, plus a concert and poetry sharing and more. AND, check it out - October is National Arts & Humanities Month. So - treat yourself to culture all month long.
Enjoy!

Jaeger and Reid

"As contemporary singer-songwriters, Judi Jaeger and Bob Reid are strictly top tier. They know how to work within the folk idiom to craft a song that is personal and introspective without ever being self-indulgent. That skill alone sets them apart from most of the pack, but that is not all they have to offer. For Judi and Bob can take a familiar song, a chestnut if you will, something from Bob Dylan or John Lennon, make it their own, and shine a new light upon it. Let's be honest. Any competent musician can cover an old standard. But it takes a particular combination of insight, intelligence, talent, skill, and courage – yes, courage – to let us see and hear the nuances and intricacies that were always there, but which perhaps we had never previously noticed. Judi and Bob, I am pleased to say, possess that very rare combination."

ASIFA created the International Animation Day (IAD) in 2002, honoring the birth of animation, recognized as the first public performance of projected moving images: Emile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique in Paris, on the 28th October 1892.
To help celebrate this occasion, the museum is having its first every Animated Film Festival. You will see quirky, creative, and innovative films. This is NOT Anime.

The Boys & Girls Club asked if we would display art from their Picasso Club.
We put the art in the kitchen and library for First Friday in September and the next week.

When the students came to see their art, they also enjoyed the Burnes/Higgins exhibit. In fact, they had a really good time pretending to be one of Janet's sculptures.
The Daily Courier featured the art.

Maiah Wynne's concert was a delight. She brought a regular guitar, an electric guitar, a banjo, a cigar box guitar, two drums, and a dulcimer to accompany her voice.
Rupert Wates told wonderful stories, sang incredible songs, and played the guitar with finesse and creativity. He will be back next August to entertain us again, including some classical music!

Sometimes we treat our greeter volunteers to a workshop. This one was taught by Cindy Hernandez and each person made a file folder art journal. (Grownups definitely enjoy working with paper and stuff!)
Simplicity in Art was taught by Susan Burnes in conjunction with her exhibit. It was fascinating how different everyone's collages were. They definitely emulated the person making them.

Once a month a watercolor group meets to critique each other's art. It is open to anyone interested. If you want to more, contact the museum.
Julie Imhoff is putting the final touches on the unpacking of the field trip art supplies. Next week we will fill the art bags that each student receives.

Did you know that if you go to a special link called Amazon Smile you can choose a nonprofit to benefit from your purchase. Each nonprofit has a unique link. Here's the portal you can use for the museum. Every little bit helps! CLICK HERE or click the picture to shop and benefit the museum. The best part is that it doesn't cost you any extra!

Could you volunteer some of your time?
There are lots of different things a volunteer can do at the museum. One of the biggest needs we have right now is for greeters. These are people who act as a host when people visit the museum. The "shift" is four hours from 1pm - 5pm or noon - 4 Tuesday through Saturday. Click the pix on the left to sign up! It's really fun.

SEPTEMBER FEATURED ARTIST: Marianne Nielsen
Artist Statement:
My love of nature has always inspired me in whatever creative activity I have endeavored to tackle. Being creative is part of my soul and gives me enormous pleasure-even when it does not turn out to my satisfaction. I find solace and peace in my watercolor painting and cannot conceive giving it up. I do this not to just please me but am stimulated in the fact that others enjoy my work as well. Being able to teach others the craft of watercolor is very important to me as I feel that I am paying back all the care and instruction I have received over the years. This medium is not just a solo journey, it involves so many others, past and present. It is my passion and love.
Marianne will be in Gallery One demonstrating her art
on First Friday, October 7 from 5:00 - 8:00.
