October 2025

Greetings!

According to my son, October is one of the chocolate months. When he was very young, he could list them: Valentines Day, Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. The stores have definitely gotten in the groove. It seems as though when one holiday ends, the other takes over the shelves. Friday night we had First Friday and gave out Halloween candy. Have you noticed that the size of the mini treats is now almost microscopic!

Did you know:

Americans consume over 600 million pounds of candy each Halloween, a quantity that generates billions of dollars in sales. The average child can consume around 7,000 calories and three cups of sugar on Halloween, with some sources stating adults may also consume three to four pounds of candy.

Okay - enough about candy. What I want to talk about is eye-candy. The new exhibit at the museum (Fire & Smoke) is stunning. There is a definite buzz happening. Come and see for yourself.

Enjoy!

Current Exhibit

A glimpse of part of the exhibit.

Most of the current exhibit fit in Suze's Subaru (although, how, we don't know. She must be good at Tetris.)

Installing the chickwire to the ceiling using ladders and our new scaffold.

Suze explains how to knot the monofilament wire to the silk panels and then to the chicken wire using s hooks. Thank goodness she was willing to help install the exhibit.

Some of the crew installing the photographs in the community gallery. Using the laser level made this task really easy.

Singularity is a Forest

Alvaro lives in Mexico City. The Oregon consulate suggested he contact various museums in order to exhibit his photography. As it happens, the timing was perfect to add his images to our current exhibit. In addition to images, he has written a poem for each of the 15 trees in English and Spanish.

Blue Gum - one of 15 photographs of tree textures from Mexico.

HELP WANTED

A few words about volunteering at the museum. As you can see in the some of the images, we have a plethora of people helping us do things. For example, Dr. David Abdun-Nur helps with exhibit installation because his wife is part of our exhibition department. Will Ausland volunteers as part of a school commitment. He needs volunteer hours and likes art. We also have lots of different people who are greeters every afternoon. Think of spending four hours meeting new people and telling the stories about the exhibit and the museum. When not busy greeting, a volunteer can read, or sew, or do art. It's a great way to spend peaceful time! Sign up and find out for your self.

Museum Happenings

JoAnn Stevens taught a class on how to create like Toulouse LeTrec.

We received a grant from Haines & Friends. All grant recipients were invited to an event at the Ashland Springs Hotel ballroom to show off what the money was for. Here you see Hyla talking to one of the Haines trustees about the Fifth Grade Field Trips that their grant helped pay for.

Doug, Tina, and Susan are busy creating their art outside the museum during Art Along the Rogue. The city wanted to have G Street be very busy so they asked if we could have some artists "doing their thing." They seemed to be having a great time - and the weather was perfect.

This Will Make You Smile!

Every once in a while we receive a note from a member or visitor about something they wanted to tell us. We also receive lots of thank you notes from our fifth grade field trip students. The following letter was from a young person who has been enjoying the museum since she was seven.
