Scenes From
Heritage Day 2023 is officially in the record books. We hope you were one of the several hundred people who visited our outdoor historic informational booths and presentation area, took a bus tour in our luxury coach to visit local area historic sites, or toured the museum during our free event / open house. Some lucky folks even won some fantastic prizes during our Heritage Day raffle.
One lucky winners ticket was drawn to win this beautiful photo print on stretched canvas titled, "Rise and Shine" that was donated by Ring Gallery on Canal Street.
Pictured below our "Tree of Good Eats" with the 11 envelopes, each containing over $100 in gift cards and certificates to local area restaurants that we raffled off to lucky winners .
A special "Thank You" to all our restaurant sponsors listed who helped make our "Tree of Good Eats" a success!

All our guests and visitors helped make Heritage Day 2023 worth hosting, but it is our Sponsors of Heritage Day who really made it a success! Please show your support for all the local area businesses who support your local museum by doing business with them, and telling them that you appreciate their support of local area history and culture.

Director's Digest
I must admit, as much as I enjoy the hectic nature of our winter event season, I am always a bit relieved when it comes to an end. With Heritage Day and February's Florida Highwaymen event with the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum officially over, it is nice to look forward to the summer months, and having less on the calendar.
However, when the events slow down, administrative tasks ramp up, and we wade into grant season. The process of rendering what we have accomplished over the last year down to narratives reveals, what really makes our museum work. You Do!
From the sponsors who show up year after year, to the volunteers who show up week after week, even those who hold annual memberships, that combined group of supporters make our efforts a success.
If I started trying to name all of these, this letter would likely extend beyond the average readers attention span, and I would forget someone who deserved recognition.
So I will keep it brief and simply say "Thank You".
Thank you all for your support in donation, time, and for the kind words of support that you share through the year. We are excited to continue the effort to preserve the history of our great little town so it can be shared with locals and visitors alike.

"Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers"
By Ann Browning Masters

"There's no better introduction to America's oldest city than Ann Browning Masters "Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers." These poems and commentaries are knowledgeable, eloquent and affectionate, capturing St. Augustine's history, beauty, people, and food, along with its magical ambience." Peter Meinke, Poet Laureate, State of Florida 2015-2019

A St. Augustine Native, Dr. Ann Browning Masters is a 12th generation Floridian. She is also a Floridana, a descendant of Spanish settlers during Florida's First Spanish Period, and a Menorcan, a descendant of the Italian, Greek and menorcan colony who came to St. Augustine in 1777 during Florida's British Period.

"Lost Attractions of Florida"
by James C. Clark

It was a simpler time in Florida. An alligator was all it took to transform a gas station or roadside fruit stand into a must-see tourist attraction. Admission was generally free, but few families could escape without buying something. At one time, these attractions dotted the Florida landscape, offering everything from ostrich races to health-restoring springs. Now, most are gone, replaced by speeding roller coasters and high-tech animatronics. Cypress Gardens, Six Gun Territory and even Mr. Toad's Wild Ride gave way to new attractions, shopping centers and housing developments. Florida Historian James C. Clark takes readers back to the days before interstate highways and airplanes bypassed mom-and-pop roadside charms and corporate mega-attractions took over.

Our video captures for the Veteran's History Project continue. This episode features Dr. Frank Farmer interviewing Patricia Chambliss and we were excited that it hit our channel prior to the end of Women's History Month.
Patricia Chambliss earned a prestigious Navy medal while serving as an air EVAC nurse during the Korean War. Find out why her groundbreaking career caring for wounded soldiers was unexpectedly cut short by Navy tradition.

"Floridays"
Thursday, May 11th
5 - 7:30pm

Join us, at the corner of "walk" and "don't walk", somewhere on US1.
Just kidding, this event will be here at the museum, 120 Sams Ave. New Smyrna Beach FL 32168.
Wear your favorite parrot head gear or island themed shirt, and join the festivities as we welcome summer and get back to living Floridays, with blue skies and ultra violet rays, of course.
The museum will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks, beer and wine.
We encourage all those attending to bring a favorite covered dish or dessert to support the meal.
Come hang out with your friends or make some new ones. We will hold a short "State Of The Museum" presentation during the event to update our members on projects we have working behind the scenes, swear in our new Board of Directors, and unveil our latest exhibit panel to commemorate our Volusia County Veterans.
Regardless of your status as a Pale Invader, or Time Crusader, you won't want to miss our most relaxed event of the year, we hope to see you there!
