Museum appears on CBS
The Modern Widows Club of central Florida recently held their monthly get together with us here at the New Smyrna Museum of History. The CBS network had reached out to the group earlier in the summer expressing interest in including the story of their group in a feature piece they were working on. Fortunately for us here at the museum, CBS joined the group the Saturday morning they were here at the museum providing us all with a little excitement.
Here is a link to a short segment of the story which was on ageing in America. The museum footage appears within the first minute Click Here to View.

President
Southeast Volusia Historical Society

Dear Members and Friends,

Here we are near the end of another tumultuous year, one full of contentious national politics, ups and downs in corona virus infections, and crazy weather patterns. We here in Volusia County are very thankful that we escaped the hurricane season unscathed. The few museum members who contracted covid suffered various degrees of symptoms, but all have fully recovered, and we are also thankful for that.

We are happy to have the museum open to visitors again, after a year of being closed. The establishment of an admission fee has helped our financial situation, and guests have been very understanding of why we had to do it. It is our hope that the virus situation improves enough in the coming year that we can resume indoor functions such as monthly evening historical presentations, Night at the Museum, and many more.

Our elevator project has had some delays, but we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now and hope to see completion soon. The exterior painting has been done for some time now, and it looks great.

I want to thank everyone who has kept the museum successfully operating this year, without you there would be no museum. We do have a need for more front desk volunteers, especially now with the busy winter season upon us. If you can commit to giving a few hours of your time on a weekly or monthly basis, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Museum Director Greg Holbrook (nsmofhistory@gmail.com or 386-478-0052) or Volunteer Coordinator Jane Seibel (nsmofhistoryvolunteers@gmail.com) to see if this would be a good fit for you.

Have a very safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!

Gary

Veterans History Project
The Veterans History Project continues. This month join Dr. Frank Farmer as he interviews Neal Coates. Mr. Coates is a native New Smyrna resident who joined the Marines and served in the Vietnam War. As a combat engineer, he carried out the dangerous mission of securing landing zones for U.S. forces in hostile territory.

Do you know a veteran of Southeast Volusia County who served in the armed forces during a time of conflict? The Veterans History Project captures these stories and the footage is shared with the Library of Congress to create an archive of these important first-hand accounts.
Contact us at 386-478-0052 or NSMofHistory@gmail.com and a member of our veteran outreach team will be glad to follow up.

Receives Florida Humanities
"American Rescue Plan" Covid Relief Funding

New Smyrna Beach, Florida — Florida Humanities, the statewide, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), has awarded The Southeast Volusia Historical Society an $11,500 grant for general operating costs to help recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
These funds will help provide funding support for staff member salaries and general operating support in the coming months.

The NEH received $135 million from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021, which was approved by Congress this past spring. The state humanities councils, including Florida Humanities, each received a portion of the NEH award to support museums, archives, historic sites and other humanities-focused nonprofits. The Southeast Volusia Historical Society was one of 129 organizations in Florida that was awarded ARP funding totaling $1.88 million from Florida Humanities. The grants are intended to meet immediate operational needs in order for organizations to remain viable and maintain delivery of public humanities programming and resources in their communities. Florida Humanities received 188 applications for ARP funding, with nonprofits requesting the most funds for staffing and utilities.

The Season of Giving
With November arriving, many of us begin to make end of year tax preparations and donation decisions.
The Southeast Volusia Historical Society, the parent organization for the New Smyrna Museum of History, asks you to remember the historical society and museum during this year's season of giving.
The Society maintains a strong investment policy statement which directs that donations larger than $1000 be split between long-term charitable trust, short-term facility improvement and maintenance, and basic operational funds.
The Southeast Volusia Historical Society was recently awarded the Guidestar Silver Seal of transparency to acknowledge the level of dedication that we provide to donors, organizations and government entities who consider donating to our organization.
