Museum Starts the New Year
with a New Brochure.

Thanks to our great local partners, Shok Idea Group, for helping us upgrade our current museum brochure. Over the past 4 years Shok, a locally based design and marketing agency, has donated countless hours of development time and guidance to us here at The New Smyrna Museum of History. They have stepped in to give support to projects like the 250th Anniversary Celebration in 2018, our new logo at the top of our newsletter, and the development of this much needed brochure upgrade. Shok has played an instrumental role in helping us bring the brand and image of the museum into modern times. Remember them as you consider marketing or design upgrades to your business. 2022 Historic Preservation Awards

It has been over a year since we entered into the planning and development stages for our preservation awards program. The program was developed to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations in our community who have made outstanding contributions to historic preservation and will give 5 awards annually. Thanks to the efforts of a few dedicated community members,
we are excited to announce that the recipients of 2022's awards have been selected.
The winners of this years awards will be recognized at the Preservation Awards & Valentine's Day Awards Gala scheduled for Monday, February 14th 2022. The gala will be held at the Grand Ol' Barn located at 721 Palmetto St. New Smyrna Beach from 5:30 PM - 9 PM. The event, themed "For The Love of History" will feature cocktails, dinner, dancing, and entertainment by Dana & Sharon. Tickets will be $75 per person and are limited. Director's Digest

Executive Director
New Smyrna Museum of History

Wow, what a year 2021 turned out to be. After it seemed like 2020 would never end, it eventually did, then 2021 doubled down on making me feel like time was passing more quickly than ever.
We kicked off last year with the groundbreaking for our ECHO grant project, as well as embarking on the development process for a new historic preservation awards program. The end of 2021 saw both of these projects coming to fruition. The ECHO grant project has transformed the North side of our building and have greatly improved the appearance of our facility. We are currently within 6 weeks of awarding our first round of historic preservation awards at our first Valentine's Day Awards Gala, an event that promises to be both elegant and exciting!

Also in early 2021, we began working to capture video interviews in support of the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project. We are glad to report that there are now 8 of these videos available through our New Smyrna Museum of History YouTube Channel. Several more interviews have been captured and are in editing. Currently, our 2022 calendar of projected veteran interviews is filling fast as we look forward to continuing this important program. A display panel of veterans from Southeast Volusia County who served in WWI was also added to our museum gallery during the past year, and work has begun on a WWII panel.

Our Collection Management and Exhibit Team (CMET) worked with the city of New Smyrna Beach's special project coordinator this last summer. They helped develop the historic photo collage that is on display in the newly renovated Baptist Church that now houses our city commission chambers and planning department. The CMET also formed an agreement with the city to display an historic city flag that was created in the 1930s during the Works Progress Administration (WPA) that is also on display in the new commission chambers.

Other notable milestones include the production of two videos highlighting the impact of the Florida East Coast Railway on our community. The videos, "The Florida East Coast Railway in New Smyrna Beach, The Early Years of Steam & The Modern Age of Diesel" are hosted on our YouTube Channel and have been an exciting addition to our growing library of video content related to local history.

The archive of local Observer and New Smyrna Beach News newspapers were formally released to the ownership of the museum and became a permanent part of our reference materials.

What is most notable about this last year is how our members, and citizens in the community, have contributed to last year's accomplishments.
The new Historic Preservation Award Program, Veterans History Project, WWI and developing WWII Veterans Displays, New Smyrna Beach News and Observer Newspaper Archives and Railway History Video Projects all happened as a result of individuals recognizing the value of preservation, and taking action on behalf of their community.

Never undervalue the difference that you can make in your community. Small ideas turn into projects, these often spark the interest of others and evolve into coordinated efforts. The results of these efforts have the potential to add value to our community for years to come.

We look forward to announcing museum programming and events to this year's schedule and once again interacting with all of you in-person in the coming weeks.

Happy New Year!

Southeast Volusia Historical Society and
New Smyrna Museum of History
Receives Florida Humanities
"American Rescue Plan" Covid Relief Funding

New Smyrna Beach, Florida — Florida Humanities, the statewide, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), has awarded The Southeast Volusia Historical Society an $11,500 grant for general operating costs to help recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
These funds will help provide funding support for staff member salaries and general operating support in the coming months.

The NEH received $135 million from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021, which was approved by Congress this past spring. The state humanities councils, including Florida Humanities, each received a portion of the NEH award to support museums, archives, historic sites and other humanities-focused nonprofits. The Southeast Volusia Historical Society was one of 129 organizations in Florida that was awarded ARP funding totaling $1.88 million from Florida Humanities. The grants are intended to meet immediate operational needs in order for organizations to remain viable and maintain delivery of public humanities programming and resources in their communities. Florida Humanities received 188 applications for ARP funding, with nonprofits requesting the most funds for staffing and utilities.
