Director's Digest
By Greg Holbrook
Executive Director
New Smyrna Museum of History
Here it is March, the Daytona 500 is in the rearview, motorcycles and Spring Breakers are on the horizon. It must be peak event season, which is always more welcome than peak hurricane season, despite the traffic. March is also a big month for us here at the Museum with our guided walking tours on a weekly rotation and several exciting events approaching quickly on the calendar.
Our 1st annual Historic Preservation Awards Gala is coming up on Thursday, March 24th and happily this event is sold out! For over 14 months now a team of dedicated individuals has been working on the development of this program, reviewing nominations and preparing for our exciting Awards Gala at the Grand Ole Barn. Those who will receive these awards include some great individuals who have made the choice to preserve or renovate a historic structure or have played an instrumental role in historic preservation in our area.
Keep an eye on this email feed, and our Facebook page for information that will be shared about the first recipients of these awards.
Also, our Heritage Day Open House for 2022 will be on Saturday, April 2nd and will take place right here at the museum and the park across the street. This event which is modeled after our 250th celebration promises to be a blast. With historic information, presentations and tours, as well as lots of activities for the kids to interact with we are gearing up for maximum fun and festivities. See the info above for sponsorship info and more specifics.
As April continues we will also see the return of in-museum programming with Rick Kilby, author of "Florida's Healing Waters, Gilded Age Mineral Springs, Seaside Resorts and Health Spas" joining us to share his research and stories of the development of the book on Thursday April 14th at 6:30 PM.
As we look forward to May we are excited about our Annual Picnic which includes members of the historical society and museum. Thursday, May 12th is the date for the picnic which is planned to be held right here at the museum at 6 PM. It will be the first membership gathering since 2020 and we are really looking forward to having some old friends and new faces back for the cookout. More details about this event will be shared as the date gets closer.
Enjoy event season folks, next thing you know it will be time for the Humidity Festival.

"Jonathan Dickinson's Journal" A true story of shipwreck and torture on the Florida coast in 1696. In the fall of 1696 the barkentine Reformation, sailing from Jamaica to Philadelphia, was wrecked off Jupiter Island on the Florida coast. Jonathan Dickinson, a young Quaker merchant, with his wife and infant son, and a party of about twenty managed to reach the mainland, only to fall into the hands of a band of hostile Indians. Held captive at a wigwam village for several weeks, Dickinson observed at first hand and later recorded in his journal a fascinating account of Indian life, rituals, and customs. First published by the Quakers in 1699, this American epic became so popular that it was reprinted sixteen times during the next 170 years.

The original Monopoly game was created from a game called "The Landlords Game" created by Lizzy Maggie in 1903. It was intended as an educational tool to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private
monopolies. By 1935 Parker Brothers had bought the copyright to the game and after receiving a patent, "the rest is history".
Check out this local take on the classic board game, New Smyrna Beachopoly. Available for in-store purchase only, drop by for your copy today.

Museum Programming Returns in April
|
|
Join us on Thursday, April 14th at 6:30 PM here at the museum for the anticipated return of in-museum programming.
We are especially excited to be welcoming one of Central Florida's favorite historians, Rick Kilby, the author of "Florida's Healing Waters, Gilded Age Mineral Springs, Seaside Resorts and Health Spas". The book is filled with rare photographs, vintage postcards and advertisements, and fascinating descriptions from over 100 years ago. Florida's Healing Waters spotlights a little-known time in Florida history when tourists poured into the state in search of good health. Rick Kilby explores the Victorian belief that water caused healing and rehabilitation, tracing the history of "taking the waters" from its origins in the era of Enlightenment.
We hope you can join us in April as Rick shares his knowledge and experiences as he developed this visually appealing and informative book. Pick up a copy of the book or one of Mr. Kilby's other titles that evening and get it signed by the author. You can also order a copy now by Clicking Here and we will ship it to you.
