Member's Cookout Returns
on Thursday, May 12th 2022
Attention all members of the Museum and Southeast Volusia Historical Society. Finally a reason to get together and grill some food. Join us Thursday, May 12th from 5 PM to 7:30 PM at the museum for the return of our annual cookout.
The museum will provide hamburgers and hotdogs, grilled to perfection of course, along with soft drinks, beer and wine. We ask that you bring your favorite cookout or picnic dish or dessert to support the effort. At 6:30 that evening we will hold a special "State of the Museum" presentation during which you will be the first to see a new exhibit piece that will join our collection in the museum gallery. We hope to see you there!
Veterans' History Project Continues
With US Army Veteran Michael McKeown
While serving in a field artillery unit during Operation Desert Storm, Army veteran Michael McKeown spearheaded an attack which took out airfields and 40 battalions of Iraqi soldiers. View Interview
Do you know a veteran of Southeast Volusia County who served in the armed forces during a time of conflict? The Veterans' History Project captures these stories and the footage is shared with the Library of Congress to create an archive of these important first-hand accounts.
Contact us at 386-478-0052 or NSMofHistory@gmail.com and a member of our veteran outreach team will be glad to follow up.
Director's Digest

New Smyrna Museum of History

It has been almost a full year since we re-opened our doors to the general public on June 1st of 2021 after being closed for just over a year. With the initiation of in-museum programming again, it finally feels like we are getting back up to speed. We have some exciting programs and presentations on the horizon to give us all something to look forward to during the summer months.

But first, I am looking forward to our Annual Members' Cookout coming up on Thursday, May 12th.
It is always a great relaxed atmosphere and wonderful chance to get to know other folks who are part of our organization. This year's "State of the Museum" presentation will provide an opportunity to find out what is going on behind the scenes with our organization as well. We hope to see you here.
You can find additional info about this members-only event at the top of this newsletter.

While we are still filing the rough edges off of June's program plans, on Thursday, July 14th we will welcome Zach Zacharias from the Museum of Arts and Science as he shares his presentation on Florida Forts and hosts a book signing following the presentation. We look forward to having more on June's program soon.

Our video production team has also been hard at work these past weeks. Over the summer months we can look forward to a four-part video series with life-long New Smyrna Beach resident Lois Tipton. Tipton, a former columnist for the local New Smyrna Beach News and Observer, wrote a column for the paper back in the 90s titled "Old Days, Old Ways". The content from the column was compiled for a book which was named after the column. We are all excited for the first of the video series to be ready for public release, which I'm told will be early this summer.
Several more installments of the Veterans History series will also find their way to our channel as this important program continues.
Stay tuned to this newsletter, or our Facebook page to stay up to date on all that's going on.
As always, we hope to see you soon, here at the museum.
The Museum Store
With summer time right around the corner, it's time to heat it up with great datil pepper products from the Museum Store.
Sweet Heat Salsa from our friends at the Minorcan Datil Pepper Company in St. Augustine.
This chunky and delicious salsa is great on chips, as a condiment on tacos or maybe even on an omlette. Did they just recommend spicy salsa for breakfast? Why, yes they did! Order Online Here:
This wonderful cranberry jam from the Minorcan Datil Pepper Company in St. Augustine is delightful on crackers with cream cheese, or as a side condiment to a pretty piece of ham. Don't eat ugly ham, dress it up with some spicy cranberry jam!
Just back in stock your favorite datil pepper hot sauce from the Minorcan Datil Pepper Company. Delightful anywhere you would normally use hot sauce.
Old Florida Style Datil Pepper Garlic Pickle Chips are simply one of the better ideas to be put in a jar for some time. These delightfully sweet bread and butter style pickles finish with a wonderful datil pepper heat that sneaks right in and makes a statement.
Old Florida Style Datil Pepper Barbeque Glaze. This sweet sticky treat is an ideal finisher for ribs, shrimp or any other grilled treat that needs to coated in barbeque goodness.
Old Florida Style Datil Pepper BBQ Rub, ideal for grilling both veggies and meat or using a dry rub or marinade.
With barbeque season upon us, this tasty rub will be the right addition to your grill side game plan.
