1930s Era Chamber of Commerce Brochure
Yields Collection of Local Area Images
One of the pleasurers of working in a museum facility is having the opportunity to review items that are part of the museum's collection. Recently, while searching through items to locate images that might be suitable for use in our museum store, we came across this wonderful brochure produced by the New Smyrna Chamber of Commerce in the 1930s.
When folded, the brochure hosts a portion of an illustrated image showing a moonlight beach scene.
Once opened, the cover reveals the full image of a couple sitting beneath a cabana umbrella on a moonlit beach.
Inside, the brochure reveals a wonderful collection of local area images that are now approaching 90 years in age.
Other panels in the brochure make a case for the reasons you should consider a visit and potential relocation here to the New Smyrna Beach area.
Visit our museum Facebook page to view a recent post where we shared scans of the individual photos that appear on this piece. We would also like to thank our modern day Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce for giving us the thumbs up to use the cover graphic from this brochure for some new apparel items that are now available in the museum store. Take a look at how they came out in the article below.

Calling All Volunteers
The New Smyrna Museum of History has a real-time need for volunteers. As you settle into your fall and winter routine, please consider donating a 3 hour shift to help fill our volunteer calendar.
Front desk volunteers greet visitors who are arriving at the museum, collect their admission fee, and give a short overview of what the visitor will experience during their visit. It's an enjoyable interaction with other history lovers, like yourself.
Reach out to us now by emailing - NSMofHistoryVolunteers@gmail.com or give us a call here at the museum, 386-478-0052.

Director's Digest
By Greg Holbrook
Executive Director
New Smyrna Museum of History
It is always exciting to welcome in Central Florida's second season, "not hot" season. I remember my family's first full year in the state when our young boys came running inside loudly proclaiming that it was cold outside. After a short discussion, we decided that it wasn't exactly cold, with the outside temps hoovering in the mid 60s, it just wasn't hot. For our family, the term "Not Hot" season was established on that day. Twenty-Eight years later, Not Hot season has turned into one of the many cringe-worthy Dad jokes that will likely summarize my legacy for future family members.
The sudden welcoming of cooler weather also serves to remind us that the holidays are on the horizon. We have been hard at work here at the museum getting the museum store ready for holiday shoppers and cold weather escapees to arrive from the North.
The Sheldon Research Library has rendered several unique local items that we can share with the community and museum visitors through our museum store. The preceding article is a example of those efforts.
Another item we look forward to sharing this holiday season is a fabulous local area cookbook called "Smyrna Cooking".
The cookbook was created by the Women's Auxiliary of what was then called the Christ's Congregational Church located along Washington Street in 1934. As the cover reflects, the book contains over 120 local family recipes that were compiled by the ladies of the church. Local historian Gary Luther found a copy of the old cookbook at an estate sale in 1985 and shared a reprint of the book in 2000 through his former company, Luther's Publishing.
We are excited to again share the old cookbook along with Gary Luther's forward that he wrote back in 1999. In the forward, Gary shares some local history about the old church, which is now nearing 150 years and is the oldest congregational church in the state. He also shares the story of how he located the old cookbook.
The book itself has shared recipe sections on Breads, Fish & Shellfish, Meat and Poultry, Vegetables, Salads, Desserts, and Preserves. We've added some colorized local post card images to add a pop of color and some historic imagery to the publication. The book is being printed and will be available soon. Stop by the museum and visit the store in-person, or visit on-line by clicking here.

Red Guava Jelly
E.B. Veronee moved to St. Augustine after losing his pineapple farm to a killer freeze that impacted the entire State of Florida in the late 1800s. He began making and selling Red Guava Jelly to the Pullman Corp. for use in the dining cars of the Florida East Coast Railway. Luckily for us all, family members of Mr. Veronee relocated cuttings from his Red Guava trees to New Smyrna Beach and have been making Red Guava Jelly using the same recipe and fruit that was used by Mr. Veronee in those early years. You won't be disappointed by the wonderful flavor of this local favorite. Pick-up your jar today!

Datil Pepper Honey
Paired flavorings are all the rage in the culinary world and this paring brings two big flavors together to the same stage. Black mangrove honey, harvested from the Mosquito Lagoon, plays host to Florida's favorite pepper, the datil. Tied historically to the Minorcan community of the late 1700s era Turnbull Settlement, datil peppers were North America's first pepper grown for profit according to The Florida Historical Quarterly October 1995. Today most datils are grown by hobby enthusiasts along Florida's east coast. With just the right amount of heat this flavor-packed paring sets the stage for a variety of culinary delights from desserts to entrees. Order your jar today and experience the sweet spicy goodness of datil pepper honey.

1920s Beach Beauty W/Parasol
Featured on an ad for the Florida East Coast Railway and Florida East Coast Hotel Company when Henry Flagler owned both ventures, this lovely lady and a poem called “The Joy of Life” shown above, beckoned travelers to get on a train and come to Florida.
The poem wastes no time in telling us what we really need and paints quite a glorious picture of what a visit to Florida will provide for the traveler.
After all, who doesn't long after “scenes you never saw before, colors, sounds, thrills and a life as exciting and changeful as a voyage of discovery.”
We were quite pleased to find this lovely lady in our archival collection so we could bring her back to continue inviting travelers to the East Coast of Florida the way she did over a hundred years ago.
Ultra-soft ladies v-neck tee

The Society maintains a strong investment policy statement which directs that donations larger than $1000 be split between long term charitable trust, short term facility improvement and maintenance, and basic operational funds.
