Volume 6 No. 36 | September 6, 2024
Notes from the Editor:
There's been a lot of chatter recently about the total loss of state funding for arts and culture in the governor's latest budget. We're learning the hard way how important it is for individuals, businesses, and organizations to take a giant step up. Scroll down to learn about a group that has been doing just that for a long time in Martin County — showing women how they can make it happen.
This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

Armory Art Center Opens Applications for its November Arts Market
The Armory Art Center is now accepting visual & performing artist and vendor applications for participation in the 8th year of its juried art festival.
In celebration of the organization’s upcoming 40th anniversary, the Armory Art Center has reimagined its annual festival to the Art + Craft + Design Creative Market, which will take place at the Armory’s historic campus on November 9-10, 2024.
Located within walking distance of CityPlace in downtown West Palm Beach, Antique Row, and the Norton Museum of Art, the market hosts nearly 5,000 visitors every year. By expanding its offerings, the market will showcase additional artisans, styles, and wares—supporting creatives in a more significant way. The creative market will also feature a variety of performing artists and delicious craft food and beverages for guests to enjoy.
Also new this year is a Juried Art Exhibition, a special month-long exhibition that will feature Florida-based artists in conjunction with the market.
“Our museum-quality contemporary art, craft, and design creative market takes place in beautiful West Palm Beach, just minutes away from other cultural destinations in The Palm Beaches,” said Jill Brown, Armory Art Center CEO. “We can’t wait to welcome talented artists & vendors from across the country to showcase their works and talents at our world-class market.”
| |
Artists are invited to apply in basketry, ceramics, decorative fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paper, wearable art, wood, leather, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and more. The show is limited to approximately 100 exhibitors, chosen by a jury of highly qualified 2D and 3D fine artists and craftspeople. The artist application fee is $50.
Performing artists—including local musicians, singer-songwriters, and dancers—and food & beverage vendors who offer creative, unique options are also invited to apply. All visual and performing artist and food & beverage applications must be submitted by September 13, and applicants will be notified by September 27.
The Juried Art Exhibition will feature Florida artists who embody this year’s theme: “A Day in the Life of Palm Beach.” Artists are invited to submit works that provoke thought while addressing contemporary issues. The exhibition will run from November 4-December 8, 2024. The submission deadline for the juried exhibition is September 27, 2024.

The Armory Art Center will open three new exhibitions this fall celebrating women artists, female excellence, and inclusivity. Called “Threads of Time and Imagination”, the collection of exhibitions features works in multiple mediums by Apia, a conceptual multidisciplinary artist based in South Florida. “Threads of Time and Imagination” is free and open to the public through Oct. 25, 2024. The Armory will host an opening reception for “Threads of Time and Imagination” on Thursday, Sept. 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The first show in the collection is “Exaggerations of History”, an innovative, captivating exhibit featuring a collection of 101 miniature portraits of female artists between the 12th and 20th centuries. No larger than a square inch, each painting was meticulously created without using magnification tools. Accompanied by an augmented reality (AR) experience, the exhibit offers visitors an immersive journey through the lives and works of these remarkable women. By integrating traditional art forms with cutting-edge technology, the exhibit aims to rectify the historical omission of female artists and highlight their significant contributions to the arts.
The second exhibition is “WATTA: Women Artists Through the Ages”. As an extension of “Exaggerations of History", Apia created a large art installation under the name WATTA (Women Artists Through the Ages). The area aims to be a reflection space where visitors can feel the presence of all the women in the series as if they were there with them.
The third exhibition is “Hi and Hello World”, which centers on inclusion and what’s needed to achieve it. It focuses on an experience that connects each visitor with their inner child—to remember a moment in life when making a new friend was as easy as going to the park.

From the MartinArts website:
Martin County's Women Supporting the Arts' mission is to build a community of philanthropists who inspire, educate & encourage women to strengthen the arts and cultural environment in Martin County.
Women Supporting the Arts is a group of dynamic women who come together with a shared passion and enthusiasm for the arts. Collectively, our members have been proactive champions of the cultural sector and all it brings to our quality of life in Martin County.
Women Supporting the Arts was born from a void. There were no local funding sources for the arts and cultural projects in our community. MartinArts responded and embraced a vision for the creation of a women's giving circle that focused on arts-related projects, programs, scholarships and public art.
Each year, 90% of the funds go directly to the pool available for grants and the balance is allocated to support administrative costs. All decisions about allocations are made by the members of Women Supporting the Arts.
| |
By creating a giving circle to address the gap, MartinArts has created a lasting legacy and method for supporting for arts and culture in our community.
Grants have been given to individual artists, students, arts organizations, civic groups, nonprofits, and governments. The average grant amount is about $1,400 with the largest being $9,000 and the smallest, $150.
The impact of these grants is hard to count. In a community where the annual economic impact of the arts is more than $27 million, the impact of Women Supporting the Arts grants is widely felt.
2024 Grant Application - Martin County
Follow this link for our application and budget form. ... Applications are due September 25. All applications must be submitted via the online platform. No other method will be considered.
MartinArts is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
