Volume 6 No. 8 | February 23, 2024

Notes from the Editor:

A week from now we'll find out if we're welcoming a month of the gentle lamb or a fierce month with the lion of March. Whichever it is, we know it will be loaded with things to do up and down the Treasure Coast! Before we get there, however, we still have a week of February to get through and from where I'm sitting today, that lion is exercising his lungs! Doesn't the sun feel good, though? See you in Downtown Vero?

This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

Don't miss this piece of history!

Kinky Boots, the musical that opened this week at Riverside Theatre tells the story of a successful shoe company in England that ran into hard times after almost a century in business. As "fashions were changing and inexpensively-made shoes from overseas were flooding the market," it took the innovative thinking of fifth-generation shoemaker Steve Pateman and Sue Sheppard to turn around the fortunes of W J Brookes.

Sue (born Anthony) owned a store that specialized in clothing for transgendered individuals and drag queens and needed a line of women’s shoes and boots that could support the weight of a man. The shoe line they came up with, called Divine, was an immediate success accounting for 50 percent of W J Brookes’ sales in their first year.

The story, told in a documentary on BBC2 in 1999, inspired Kinky Boots, a film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth in 2005. A musical adaptation of the film opened on Broadway in April 2013 with original music written by Grammy Award-winning artist Cyndi Lauper and a book written by Tony Award-winning actor Harvey Fierstein.

Kinky Boots won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score for Lauper.

A production opened in London’s West End in 2015 and earned the Olivier Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed in April 2019 after over 2,500 performances.

The show focuses on Charlie Price and the changes his life takes when his father unexpectedly dies leaving him with the shoe factory, which is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. While contemplating his family legacy and his duty to their long-time employees, Charlie comes in contact with Lola, a drag queen star, who is looking for durable footwear for her and her fellow drag performers.

Radically changing the factory’s product line surprises the workers and brings up strong hostility by others. Though challenges are exposed, in the end, the seeds of acceptance and empathy are sown. When the debut of the new shoe line is put in jeopardy at an important footwear show in Milan, Lola and her angels arrive to save the day.

Kinky Boots is on the Stark Stage at Riverside Theatre from February 20 – March 17.

Performances are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 7:30pm; Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm; with matinees on Wednesdays, select Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm.

Fiber Artists to Show “Surprising” Works

At Center for Spiritual Care

Some of the liveliest artists in Vero Beach don’t always wield a paint brush. Some use a needle, others glue, still others a band saw. Seven of them will introduce their work Friday, Mar. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Care during a reception to which the public is invited.

The artists are Grace Cormier, Haeley Kyong, Sheilah McAvoy, Michelle Nevaeh, Phyllis Petrillo, Yvonne Steere, and Paulette Visceglia . All will be exhibiting through Apr. 26 in the Center’s show, “Tied, Died, Woven and Stitched: A Fiber Art Exhibit.”

Center Director Carol Ludwig thinks this will be one of the most surprising exhibitions ever to take place in her gallery space. “These artists can be lighthearted and they can be cerebral,” she says. “But they never cease to delight and they are always fascinating.”

Much of Cormier’s recent work is based on the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi: rustic elegance, impermanence and imperfect, simple beauty. Kyong’s art is inspired by a lifelong passion for color and form. It is the prism through which she re-creates and re-envisions the world. The unique charm of McAvoy’s works can be traced to her abstract application of color, texture and reflective materials.

A classically trained chef, Nevaeh combines live-edge and highly figured exotic and domestic woods with high-quality epoxy and pigments in one-of-a-kind functional art. Petrillo creates her own fabrics for collector quilts that explore joy, inspiration, spirituality and healing. Steere’s use of color, layering, shaping and fabric selection has been called painterly. Visceglia works with oils and dyes and her bold fabric colors are especially noted for their energy and dynamism.

Following the opening reception, visitors may view “Tied, Died, Woven and Stitched” each Thursday and Friday between 3 and 6 p.m. The artists will hold a roundtable discussion at the Center Mar. 19 at 3 p.m. open to the public.

The Center is located at 1550 24th St. at the corner of 24th St. and 16th Ave. in downtown Vero.

Take in Saint-Saëns’s beloved musical menagerie, The Carnival of the Animals, featuring Principal Keyboard Jean Black and the illustrious Jacob Craig 7 p.m., March 2 at Satellite HS Performing Arts Center and 3 p.m. March 3, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach.

Aaron leads Saint-Saëns’s beloved musical masterwork, The Carnival of the Animals. Brimming with humor and vivid color, and filled with music audiences will recognize, this is one of the most purely fun works ever composed. This presentation of Saint-Saëns’s masterwork for two pianos and orchestra highlights Principal Keyboardist Jean Black, together with the incredible Jacob Craig.

Craig will also be featured on Saint-Saëns’s glittering and extravagant Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the composer’s most famous. Nobody twinkles in quite the same way as Camille Saint-Saëns. His Piano Concerto No.2, one of the greatest piano concertos, was written in 1868 and was once described as a progression “from Bach to Offenbach.” It opens, sure enough, with a solo piano cadenza that is not many miles away from the style of a baroque organ improvisation. This leads into a stormy opening movement, for which Saint-Saëns filched a theme by his star pupil, the young Gabriel Fauré, who had set aside the choral work for which he had written it and did not seem to mind when his teacher turned it into a smash hit. Next comes a debonair scherzo and an irrepressible tarantella finale.

Also featured on the program is the world premiere of Sonya Leonore Stahl’s Eagle Music, a soaring work that evokes birds of prey gliding euphorically through the sky. The concert also features two shorter works by composers, Antonin Dvorak and Claude Debussy.

Dvorak's Carnival depicts “a lonely, contemplative wanderer reach[ing] at twilight a city where a festival is in full swing. On every side is heard the clangor of instruments, mingled with shouts of joy and the unrestrained hilarity of people giving vent to their feelings in songs and dances.”

The concert is rounded out with one of Debussy’s most famous works, the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, an Impressionist masterpiece that will transport you to a mythical land.

$30 tickets for Carnival of the Animals include admission and are available through the orchestra website or at Marine Bank & Trust. Tickets at the door are $35. Concertgoers aged 18 and under or with a college ID are admitted free.

The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra is one of only a handful of U.S. orchestras to perform year-round. Concertgoers aged 18 and under or with a college ID are admitted free to every SCSO concert. So You Want to Paint a Mural!

Map of Murals

Find murals in Fort Pierce on the NEW geographic information systems map.

The purpose of the Peacock Arts District (PAD) Mural Program is to promote and commemorate Fort Pierce’s rich cultural heritage, reinforce the growth of arts and culture within the city, and increase tourism and economic development to the Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency (FPRA) area. The project strives for diversity of style, scale, and media represented in a series of murals on buildings within the PAD. It will assist the FPRA in reaching its strategic vision as described in the 2020 FPRA Plan.

Call For Muralists - APPLY NOW

The FPRA invites qualified muralists to apply for this public art commission, which is the installation of murals within the peacock arts district. Murals will be installed on private property in partnership with their respective owners.

NEW Application: Interested artists must apply online through CaFE, a call-for-entry site for artists. Once you get to the site, follow these steps: Step 1 - Create a free account, Step 2 - Search for "Fort Pierce Call for Muralists" under the Find Calls tab, Step 3: Apply. Note: If you applied through the previous forms, you must reapply through this new system. Previous applications are no longer valid.

There are currently 4 properties available for murals: (1) 117 N. 5th Street, (2) 717 Orange Ave, (3) 526 Ave A, (4) Indian River Drive Wall (along County Road 707).

Fort Pierce's Mural Program: A Q&A with Kaitlyn Ballard

How did the mural program get started? Who came up with the idea?

The Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency (FPRA) initiated the program during the summer of 2023. Originating from an idea conceived by the FPRA, the program was named after the Peacock Arts District (PAD), indicating its concentration within that specific area of the city. Thus, the program is officially known as the PAD Mural Program. Its primary objective is to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the PAD while fostering community cohesion and stimulating economic development in the vicinity.

In the end, who makes the artist selection and how much control does the city have over the artist’s work?

While the staff initiates the vetting process, the ultimate decisions are made by the property owners who are involved in the project. These property owners are those whose properties are slated to receive the mural. The City/FPRA and property owners only have control over the design themes of the artwork. Typically, there is a vision established regarding what the artwork should convey, but artists are granted the artistic freedom to creatively interpret and express that vision.

If a mural is vandalized, what steps are taken to recover it?

As murals are created on private properties, it is the responsibility of property owners to maintain them once they are completed. Our program mandates the application of sealant to safeguard murals against UV rays, natural deterioration, and vandalism such as graffiti. With the sealant, property owners can have any marks removed without harming the mural.

What feedback from the public have the murals elicited?

We've received enthusiastic praise for this program both online and in person. Many people describe the murals as "cool," "awesome," and simply "great." With the help of three incredibly talented artists, the PAD has been revitalized, putting Fort Pierce in the spotlight. The community appears to have a genuine appreciation for such high-caliber artistic talent.

Is there a point at which a mural has come to the end of its run and is painted over, leaving a blank canvas for another artist?

As our new program has introduced murals that are still less than a year old, we anticipate their presence continuing for the foreseeable future. Typically, murals can endure for 3-5 years, contingent upon maintenance and the caliber of materials utilized. When a mural reaches its conclusion, property owners have the option to either paint over it or substitute it with another mural. Nonetheless, we advocate for the latter, as it sustains the artistic vitality within the PAD.

Has the city set a limit on the number of murals that will be allowed?

At present, there is no set limit. However, considering the scarcity of murals in our Peacock Arts District, there is ample opportunity for expansion. This is why we have initiated its second launch.

This black comedy, The Pillowman, is widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years.  It examines the role of the artist in society and asks what price we pay for freedom of expression. With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm, the play centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art.
