Music Made in Heaven is a unique handbell ensemble. Each of our bells has been donated in memory of a child who passed away and is inscribed in remembrance. The music played by the bells representing our children is unlike any other – it is a beautiful contribution the children are continuing to make to the world every time we ring. The message behind the music is one of faith, hope, joy and gratitude for our children's lives.

MMIH Premieres Piece in Memory of Sandy Hook

Music Made in Heaven has added a new piece of music to our repertoire in memory of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012.

“When the Stars Began to Fall,” arranged by well-known handbell composer Jason Krug, was premiered at our annual Gathering concert this past May.

Shortly after the tragedy, ringers in the group pooled their funds to donate and inscribe the B3 bell in memory of the 20 children and six adult staff members killed by a lone gunman. The incident was the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in U.S. history.

“The group felt a special connection to the grief, pain and desire to remember the children in a beautiful way,” said MMIH Director Barbara Marley. “There is an inextricable tie to the mission of Music Made in Heaven, which includes bringing hope and healing to bereaved families of children who have died.”

In 2016, Marley placed the top bid in a silent auction fundraiser organized by The Raleigh Ringers for a composition by Krug. Her idea was to commission a piece that MMIH might be able to perform at the dedication of the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial.

“When Barbara approached me about writing this piece, I was immediately intrigued, honored and daunted,” Krug said in an email. “Writing a piece for such an emotionally-charged subject would be no easy task.”

He decided to incorporate two hymn tunes: "My Lord, What a Morning" and "Be Still, My Soul."

“The former I chose both because of the haunting, pleading quality of the tune itself, as well as the imagery of the singer lamenting the morning ‘when the stars began to fall,’” Krug wrote. “That seemed like an apt summation of the emotions of those involved in such a senseless and heartbreaking event. I contrasted that with ‘Be Still, My Soul,’ which, again in both tune and text, I've always found a hymn of great comfort.”

The piece transitions from the chaos of the tragedy to a message of hope, healing and reconciliation.

“I didn't want to move too quickly from heartbreak to comfort, so I incorporated some intense, angry original material with the hymn tune on chimes trying to break through the tumult,” Krug wrote. “By the end, the hymn reigns supreme, providing what I hope is a sense of solid comfort to the listener as they pass through this emotional journey.”

The Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial was dedicated in Newtown in November 2022, in time for the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. In keeping with the town’s tradition of quiet remembrance, it was a private ceremony for the victims’ families.

While MMIH was not able to perform at the event, the group was honored to premiere “When the Stars Began to Fall” earlier this year and hopes the piece might be published and offered to the greater handbell community.

Two new ringers have joined Music Made in Heaven this fall: Alice Stinebaugh of Cary and Rob Walker of Raleigh. Ann Lowe Vodicka has rejoined the group after a short hiatus. We welcome them to the group!

Two of our longtime members, Betty Godwin and Bonnie Woodruff, have retired. Shawn Yates enjoyed her one year with group but has stepped away. One other member, Chris Schlachter, is taking time off this year. We will miss them!

Donations in Memory of Our Children

Three Chimes

Thanks to many donations, the handles of all of our handbells have been inscribed in memory of a child. We are now accepted gifts to inscribe our choir chimes.

For each chime, an inscription of up to three lines will be added. The child’s name will be listed on our website and, when the group performs, each child's name will be acknowledged in the program.

The suggested donation for each chime is $300. Please contact us for more information.
